First trip to PEI need suggestions

Traveling early June to Nova Scotia and PEI. Flying in to Halifax and will spend a few days there before traveling to PEI. Will have approx 3-4 days in PEI and looking for advise on what area to stay. Is it possible for have a home base for our time there and where would you suggest?? Enjoy hiking, exploring, beaches, Etc. Planning on doing Anne of Green gables. Is that something we can do for a few hours and still have to for something else that day?

Hi S. Jo!

If I had to pick a home base, it would be either Charlottetown, which is the big town and where lots of hotels and motels are located; or near Cavendish, where the Anne of Green Gables attractions are found. It depends on whether you want to overnight in town, with the selection of restaurants and shops and cultural activities, as opposed to a rural spot.

Prince Edward Island is small enough that you can drive one-way to any extremity from Charlottetown or Cavendish in two hours.

The majority of touristy attractions are concentrated within a half-hour drive of Charlotttetown or Cavendish, but not all. I appreciate spots like Green Park, northwest of Summerside, the Greenwich Annex of PEI National Park, near St. Peters in the northeast, and Buffaloland Provincial Park, not far from Montague in the southeast. Since these are a bit farther (a tiny bit farther), they don't get the crowds that Cavendish sees.

Crowds? Anne of Green Gables lore is beloved around the world, especially in Japan, and thousands of Japanese visit each year. You'll see the Green Gables house and the Avonlea farm. (Anne is a fictional character, of course, so these attractions rank in the same category as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park.) In Charlottetown, the Confederation Center live theater does Anne of Green Gables - The Musical all summer. If the red-headed moppet is part of your plans, this will be an obligatory cultural visit for you.

Happy travels!

David

Thank you so much. Any suggestions on splitting our time between Nova Scotia and PEI or suggested routes to take to make the most of our time. We will get into Halifax late on a friday night and leave the following Sat.

our plans have changed and now flying into halifax on a monday arriving at 5:30pm and leave on sunday am. So now have just 5 full days. Is it feasible to drive from halifax airport to Charlottetown hotel, spend Tuesday on PEI and then head back to Nova Scotia late on Tues night and spend the remainder of our trip on NS??

We wouldnt necessarily have to stay in Charlottetown, just looking for place to stay the night that would be convenient for coming in late on monday night.

Are you familiar with google maps? It's a very convenient way to map out your schedule with driving times, routes, etc.

So for example - Halifax Airport to Charlottetown is a 3.5 hour drive ... arriving at 5:30 ... say an hour to get through customs, baggage, pick up rental car - you'd be on your way at 6:30 ... arriving Charlottetown about 10pm.

Mid-June it stays light until quite late, but you might consider stopping for the night on the NS side of bridge ...such as Amherst.

I love PEI (after a few visits we bought land and built a cottage) but I don't know that with your limited time, it's worth 7 of those hours driving for a day in PEI. I think you might be better off concentrating on one province or the other. Nova Scotia is large, if you decide to stay there, don't try to see it all! They both have their charm, if you limit the scope, you should have a great time!

The official PEI tourism website has a database of all licensed and approved accommodations in the province, including cottages.

ColleenL - please start your own post rather than tagging onto someone else's ... your query is completely different from that of the OP, and it is unfair and rude for them to receive answers to your query rather than their own.
