Never have been to Detroit, our group is interested in staying in Windsor for the Lions game on Dec 30. Any suggestions on a good hotel to stay at that's in a good/fun area and not too far from Ford Field? Or, hotels in Detroit that are good to stay in for Lions games?

I stay in Windsor and take the Tunnel bus over, it's like $8 return per person and no worries about staying in Detroit.....
Believe it or not there is some nice and safe hotels in Detroit but prices will be higher then in Windsor.
MGM casino for example has a lovely hotel but last time I check rates it was $400 a night.
The downtown area of Detroit isn't so bad but you can't just wander off in any direction. Back in the 1980's it was never go north of Warren st, I'm kind of out dated. You might want to post your question in the Detroit Michigan forum, customs can be a hassle. Windsor isn't so much fun, IMO
Oh, forget about bus service--well the tunnel bus OK but the rest is a joke, buses are late-if they come at all and yeah its not so safe. You drive your car--forget bike riding also.
Edited: 7:06 pm, December 22, 2012The bus service is awesome, Windsor transit specifically run special event buses just for sporting events in Detroit....I've taken it for three events, two tigers games and a red wings game....I'm taking next week for the Lions game myself...better than paying parking and being able to drink without having to worry about driving...
Bike riding? ummmmmm?
I was talking Detroit bus service if they stay in downtown Detroit. Canada buses are light years better in every way. Yes Windsor transit runs the tunnel buses and they do make a few stops in Detroit--I guess you could use them to get around ?
If the OP is 21 or older, there is some nice clubs and hotels near Ford Field. Tens of thousands of suburbanites travel down there to see the games without any problems. Its mainly the area away from the river front that gives Detroit such a bad rap--and the poor city services like buses
Edited: 11:08 am, December 23, 2012There are many great bars and pubs in the downtown area which, unfortunately, cater to many 19+ on the weekends. There are few that tend to attract an older crowd though.
As far as downtown Windsor Hotels, they also tend to fill up on the weekends with the 19+ crowd. The two exceptions to this tend to be Caesars and the Hilton. I would suggest trying their websites to get an idea of prices and availability.
The bus service between Windsor and Ford Field is convenient and reliable.
My recommendation would be to stay on this side of the border and just transit to and from the game!
It might well be best to stay in Windsor overnight. You will likely get a better deal for a clean/safe hotel room. Its just customs can take at times an hour to cross or it might be 10 mins-you never know till you cross, plus its $9 to drive your car across either the bridge or tunnel. You need to pay both ways-$4.50 each way. No bicycle riding across the bridge or tunnel.
Bicycle riding is no problem either in Windsor.

Maybe cause my bike goes right along with my suitcase now whenever I travel.
Plus many buses have bike racks in front so you can use both, the city buses and a bicycle to get around town. Its cheaper to park vs a car and for short trips its almost as quick as driving a car.
I no longer see myself traveling without my bike, I guess not everybody feels that way, lol
