Omnia or Ouzeri, is one better than the other? Love Greek food ...looking for the best in Toronto! |
|
We had a good dinner at Omonia on August 1; however, we definitely wouldn't describe it as the best Greek food in Toronto. We'd return, but only because we thought the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. The restaurant lacks ambience, so if dining atmosphere is important to you, you may find Omonia disappointing. (On our recent visit, the roasted lamb special was excellent, as was the appetizer platter of mixed dips with pita.) Haven't been to Ouzeri in many years, so I can't say how the two compare. For us, the best Greek food we've had in Toronto has been at Avli, across the street from Omonia. Our meals there have consistently been very good, and better than most of the Greek food we've had on our trips to Greece (their seafood pie is superb, while their appetizer dips are excellent).

I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm married to a Greek, have travelled in Greece, and have sampled Greek food in various North American cities. Forget about Omonia. Penelope is to Greek what Mandarin is to Chinese. The best Greek food I've found in Toronto has been at: - Mezes -- great octopus, mezedes (tapas), and other things - Avli -- they tend to focus on savoury pies. Great in winter. Ouzeri and Megas would be next on my list. I've been meaning to try Pan and Kalyvia, but somehow we always end up at one of our favourites.

thanks everyone, it looks like some great choices; will avoid Omnia.

Would agree totally with Estragon but would add Pantheon to the list also. Great, simple whole grilled fish and other great seafood as well.

Hello wrldtrav. The great thing about experiencing the Danforth, is the entire area is filled with Greek restaurants and interesting shops and boutiques so you will get a real flavor of a Greek neighbourhood. Apparently, it is the largest Greek neighbourhood in North America. I have had the pleasure of spending quite a bit of time on the Danforth, and it is great fun. As well as the restaurants and cafes, there are many bakeries and pastry shops and several very nice home decor shops. Here is a link, if you are wishing a little more information about the Danforth. http://www.greektowntoronto.com/about.html All the best.

thanks again, everyone, for all the help! We love Toronto!!!

Having lived in Toronto for 20 years - Penelope is NOT a good Greek place to eat. In a tourist trap, the food is rubbish, prices are high and ambience is nil. Go to Greek Town for the ambience and atmosphere, lots of places to eat, good food to be had, great patio's for people watching, prices are reasonable, and so many places there is something for everybody - and every budget.
