Welcome to the NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE TRAVEL FORUM.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is just north of Niagara Falls (by about 20 Kms = 30 Minutes Drive via the Scenic Niagara River Parkway)… one needs pretty much a rental car in get there… as the NOTL Shuttle runs irregularly, and cab fare is EXPEN$IVE.
Besides, one requires a car to get around beyond Historic NOTL in Wine Country… think farmland here, as Vineyards & Orchards are really just another type of farming.
NOTL to Downtown Toronto is aprox 135 Kms (84 Miles) and close to 2 Hours in Driving Time*
There really is no public transit between the two… you have to go either onto St Catharines or back to Niagara Falls to find transportation to Toronto (Train or Bus).
There is no need for a car in Toronto (to have one is a bit of a liability in regards to Traffic and Parking)
*NOTE – Driving time is just that… time spent driving. It doesn’t account for Stops, Breaks or Sightseeing… nor for Delays caused by things like Traffic Congestion, Road Construction or Weather Conditions. It is estimated using GOOGLE MAPS for the shortest most direct route (unless otherwise noted) and driving under ideal conditions at the posted speed limit.
Toronto as Canada’s largest city… has a ton to see and do. A “typical” visit is about 4 Days… but one could easily spend a week there.
NOTL is known as a couples getaway destination… historic town, award winning accommodations, restaurants and spas, live theatre & music venues, artisans and art galleries, boutique shopping and antique stores… and oh ya some of the best wine in all of Canada.
It is a very prim & proper looking (the highest concentration of Victorian Architecture in Canada) and sort of quite old-fashioned (can we say “romantic”) destination. Is there enough to see or do for 3 Days… well that depends on what your interests are… all the things I mentioned above along with Wineries, Wine Tours & Tastings… or maybe you are more the outdoorsy type and would enjoy long walks, bird watching, hiking & biking.
If you have a car you can explore beyond NOTL and see some of the rest of the Niagara Peninsula (the land between the two Great Lakes of Lake Ontario & Lake Erie)… More Orchards & Vineyards (and Wineries)… Parkland and Forests, Conservation Areas, Hiking Trails, Biking Routes, Horseback Riding, Quaint Towns, Great Lake Beaches and Historic Sites… the Welland Canal and the Giant Staircase Locks where the Ocean going Ships & Lakers “Climb the Mountain”… go UP the 100 Metres (300 Feet) of The Escarpment to reach Lake Erie.
So ya if you are looking for quiet exploration and couple-time… then there is plenty to do in the Niagara Region.
If you are a glitz & glamour type or interested in nightlife… then Niagara Falls or Toronto is a better pick.
PS… TA TIP - Notice that your TA LOCATOR says “home”… although quite cute it doesn’t tell us anything about you… which is helpful whenever Local Advisors & DEs are called to answer a Question. Having a TA LOCATOR that more reflects where you are from, means less back & forth and in the end you gain a greater experience from TA… and it also means your replies will be more customized (we’d know if you were familiar with Kms or Miles, Temps in C or F etc). Your TA LOCATOR can be either your Hometown, or nearby big city… Province / State or Region… you can change it on your TA PROFILE Page whenever you are logged into your TA Account.
