Niagara Falls in January

Hi All -

So we are Native New Englanders, from New Hampshire and wanted a little getaway. The prices in Niagara Falls are fantastic right now so we figured, since we have never been, we would go for 4-5 nights. My family is flipping out saying the drive from NH to NY is crazy dangerous because of snow in Buffalo and Niagara. I have driven in the snow my entire driving life and never had a problem. I know some things will be closed but the winter light show is still on and there are plenty of other things to do (casinos, zoo, sleep in peace away from our little ones...)

So my question is... Is the weather really that much different in Niagara as it is in NH? It is currently 12degrees out with 2' of snow on the ground here!

Thanks!!

Hi Jcandherboys;

The answer is - yes and no. Overall, no it is not, BUT the area is prone to "lake effect" snow, caused by wind that picks-up moisture off of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

If you keep your plans flexible and your radio tuned to the weather, you should be fine.

I would agree with rescue Team, and only add that assuming you take I-90 across from Syracuse, that the highway tends to be affected by blowing snow across that stretch as it is quite flat and open ...but again ... keep your eye on the forecast and plan accordingly. Lake effect snow in the Buffalo/NF area can be quite localized ... you can have snow on the southwest side of Buffalo and almost none in NF.

You should not be much different than NH. It all depends on wind direction so keep an eye on the weather. Most lake effect off Lake Erie affects the area south of Buffalo and doesn't reach to Niagara Falls.

Though it wprobably won't happen until later, lake effect in Buffalo is diminished once Lake Erie freezes over as winds can't pick up the moisture.

So just keep an eye on the weather and chances are you won't see anything.
