Road trip from Halifax/Cabot Trail

Hi everyone! I was about to stay home for our stretch of days off but reading on this forum got me excited hence I'm planning a last minute road trip to Halifax July 1st/2nd to 9th hoping to explore the Cabot Trail and surrounding areas. With the help of this forum, I've gathered a rough itinerary but I still have a few questions hoping the experts here can shine some light on them. I have not booked any accommodations and our flights can be changed easily.

July 1st: Flying in from Toronto landing around 11am

Explore Halifax/boardwalk/dinner

Will the metro bus from the airport to downtown be on holiday hrs? Should I fly in on the 2nd instead?

July 2nd: Peggy's Cove/Lunenberg/Mahone Bay and drive to Iona. (Is Highland village in Iona worthwhile for the detour?)

July 3rd: Highland Village, Iona and then drive to Baddeck

July 4th: Baddeck: Bell's museum. What other attractions are there in the Baddeck area? I was reading on a possible boat tour of the lake?

Should I spend another night in Baddeck?

July 5th: Cheticamp. Do I need to stay 2 nights in Cheticamp? Or should I stay 1 night in Ingonish? Also I would like to include the Ceilidh Trail.

July 6th: should I stay an extra night in Pleasant Bay/Pictou or should I go straight back to Halifax from Cheticamp?

We are mainly interested in scenery and cultures. This may sound silly but for the Cabot Trail, aside from just driving on it. Are there trails we can hike around? If so where will they be?

Where do one explore on the Cabot Trail? Should we get to a hotel/b&b as a base and go around the area? Or should we make stops along the way?

Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks a bunch!

I am guessing that the metro bus service from the airport will be on the holiday schedule on July 1.

It is about a six hourr drive to go from Lunenburg to Baddeck so you have not left much time to explore:

After that I am confused by what you say. I have put a map below of one route to take in Cape Breton. You can go in either direction. I have put some links below for you to look at and then you can come back with more questions.

In some of your targeted areas there is a limited number of accommodations, As in many rural, less populated, parts of our province, tourism is a seasonal business so you will not find a Holiday Inn located there.

To this date, 2013 is showing a greater number of pre-booked rooms than in recent past years so I would strongly urge you to think about in which places you want to stay as you explore/experience Cape Breton.

For licensed/inspected B&Bs throughout Nova Scotia, please check www.nsbedandbreakfast.com, the website of the Nova Scotia Bed & Breakfast Association. The NSBBA's 2013 "Sea & Stay: B&B Locator Map" is available at any Visitor Information Centre in NS.

Maryann has given you lots of fodder to work through. You may find my post here helpful. i realize different time of year

tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g154976-i327-k66090…

I would suggest day 2 spend night in Lunenburg area check out some beaches and blue rocks, particularly ovens park.

Day 3 cross over to Wolville and tour Bay of Fundy to Pictou then stay there or continue on to Antigonish depending on length you want to drive.

Day 4 head to Baddeck, visit Museum , boat tour of Baddeck Bay beautiful or Doneldas puffin boat tour.spend night here..

Day 5 Head up the trail stopping in Ingonish, Pleasant Bay or Dingwall- you do not mention type of accommodation looking for? and of course which hikes you decide on from Maryann's?

Day 6 could spend another night in Higlands or continue to Cheticamp.

Day 7 I would recommend hanging out around Margaree Harbour, Inverness and Mabou area fabulous beaches, some wonderful cabins on the beach in Inverness.. Pick up great pinic food at Dancing Goat Margaree

tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g499219-d10…

Day 8 you could leave CB and head to Shubenacade and go out with a bang with Tidal Bore River Rafting if the tide timing was compatible with your schedule!

You don't mention time of flight on 9th if early a good alternative to chain hotel is Inn on the Lake in Fall River also has shuttle to airport.

Hope that helps and gives you some ideas and answers some of your questions.
