Like Mat54 from Toronto we have done the Skyline trail, the Bog trail and the MacIntosh Brook trail. We also did the Lone Shieling trail. We did all of these trails on the same trip in Fall 2009. These 4 trails were all very easy, especially the Bog trail which for the most part is a boardwalk over the bog.
The Skyline trail does take a while but the views are worth it and it is fairly easy as the trail is pretty flat and well maintained and there are sections where there are boardwalks to walk on. You get some very nice views of the Cabot trail from the Skyline Trail. there is a side trail off the main trail. My husband did the side trail on the way back to the car and he said it was more of a hike and not as well maintained as the main trail. I chose not to do the side trail on the way back to the car.
The Lone Shieling trail was a nice trail which went thru the forest. It took you to a replicia of a crofter's cottage. this was not a real long walk and pretty easy from what I remember.
From what I remember of the MacIntosh Brook trail, it was a bit of a longer walk but not as long as the Skyline trail and was thru the forest. You did end up at a nice waterfall. there were sections where the trail was a bit rough and uneven but managable.
Enjoy your trip! Cape Breton and Nova Scotia are wonderful!!
