Victoria Trip: Got some questions

ok, we will be staying at the Empress hotel for a family vacation. Been to the Museum in Victoria before so will probably skip it this time. We may hit Butchart Gardens and just heard about Beacon Hill Park. Based on the reviews, sounds like a place we should see.

Is Beason Hill Park

1. a public park? ie. free parking, no entrance fee?

2. Do you take your car there for the tour and stay inside your car or get out and walk?

What are some family friendly eateries close to the Empress? We will have a car with us so can drive and do pick ups for food as well. Not looking for fancy dining as, looking for family (kid) friendly food if I can call it that. Have GPS in the car too (and cell phone) so anywhere we have to drive, we can do it.

What cool things can we do as a family that is within walking distance of the hotel?

Also heard there is a fireworks show at Butchart on saturdays? Worth it to stay late with the family?

Just did a search on Yelp for nearby eateries from the hotel and did not come up with much. Don't mind driving if there is easy parking at an eatery that is a little further than walking distance from the hotel. Any other tips (eating or otherwise) would be great.

Thrifty Foods is about 12 min walk from the Empress: Map is here: http://goo.gl/maps/kOCpM

There are lots of things to do in Victoria, What kinds of things do you like to see and do when you visit a new place? Have you had a chance to look up in the green navigation bar under Things to Do? How many nights are you planning to be in Victoria? What age range are your kids? It would help to know that.

If your kids are old enough to walk around on their own two feet, leave the car parked, forget about the GPS and walk around. You will be glad you did. You only need the car for going further afield.

Bug Zoo usually appeals to kids. The Inner Harbour causeway has entertainers and buskers. One of those guys who spray paints himself in silver and then stands motionless until someone puts some coins in his hat, then he starts acting. Take a harbour ferry ride up to the entrance of the Upper Gorge. Check the suggestions made up thread again.

Thrifty Foods has an exceptionally good bakery and prepared foods section, so you could get hot meals to take out -- chicken, lasagna, meat loaf, etc.. We do a lot of shopping there when we stay at our Worldmark timeshare condo on the harbor.
