Victoria to Vancouver with public transport?

Hi, we're looking at going from Victoria downtown to downtown Vancouver via public transport. Just have a concern though as we will have our two kids and luggage including a set of golf clubs! Will we be able to carry all of this on the buses, ferry and sky-train and will there be a surcharge?

No surcharge, but you are signing up for a bit of an arduous journey. You might want to consider just taking public transit at the Victoria end, walking on to the ferry, and then purchasing a ticket for the PCL bus into Vancouver on board the ferry. This will probably work out slightly less expensive than taking PCL all the way from Victoria (although honestly, this is a vacation, I'd just bite the bullet and pay for the PCL fare right through. Transit is fine, but with kids and luggage, that will wear you out).

Kids, luggage AND golf clubs - take Pacific Coach Lines bus right from downtown Victoria to downtown Vancouver.

People do this every day it's NBD.

This is easy - take Pacific Coach Lines. You board the bus in Victoria at the bus station beside the Empress Hotel, store your luggage underneath, and enjoy the ride to the ferry. The bus rolls on the ferry, so no need to worry about luggage. Grab some lunch and enjoy the ride.

Some buses go straight through to downtown Vancouver, while others will offload once you arrive on the mainland and transfer you to another bus to continue the trip downtown. Check with the bus station in Victoria.

It's a nice trip. It's comparatively cheap, and the ferry ride is one for the bucket list. Enjoy.

Thanks for all of your helpful comments. Kids arent the problem travelling its the 'husband'!!! Didnt realise that the bus drove on to the ferry, so that definitely sounds the easiest way! Just thought that if we were going to be getting on and off the coach anyway we might as well save some $ and go public transport, seeing as my husband is spending all our millions on playing golf : D

The PCL depot in Victoria is on Douglas St at Belleville. It's a 4 hour journey (by car, by public transit/walking on the ferry or by PCL) and has to be the most convenient public transportation available. In Vancouver it arrives at Pacific Central Station. Here's the map of what's involved, Zoom it in for detail. What is your hotel in Vancouver, for advice of how to get there from PCS.

Just to give you an idea of the differences between public transit and PCL. Transit would take 1 hour from Victoria to Swartz, then walk on the ferry, then walk off at Tsawwassen (a long overhead walkway) to the waiting #620 Bridgeport Station bus, then transfer right at Bridgeport to Canada Line rapid transit down to Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver. #620 + CL = 1h25min. PCL would involve getting to the bus station and onto the coach, 45 min drive to Swartz arriving 15 min before loading, priority loading for the bus into the bow of the ship, go up on deck to enjoy the scenery, go down to the car deck to board the bus, priority off loading for the bus, 1 hour into PCS.

Do you know if PCL has a car rental place in the depot in Victoria? Sounds like it might be easier to rent one there (or in Vancouver ferry building if that is your final destination). Thanks.

No, Pacific Coach Lines do not offer car rentals. Enterprise car rental advertises that they will "pick you up", so that might be a good avenue to explore. However, if you are riding PCL downtown to downtown, then there are several offices of the major car rental companies in the downtown of both cities.
