This is a map of downtown Vancouver: discovervancouver.com/images/…m_dtown.gif

As you can see, it's a peninsula, so, as long as you're staying anywhere on that peninsula, you'll be located within walking distance to the main attractions.

Generally speaking, Robson Street has a lot of great 3 and 4 star hotels which is a very popular street, in the heart of the city's shopping district. The Listel and the Pacific Palisades are some good ones.

Everyone raves about the Wedgewood Hotel and many do about the Fairmont Waterfront. If you're looking for an old world heritage hotel in the heart of downtown, the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is good.

We recently spent 3 nights in Downtown Vancouver and stayed at the Sandman Suites on Davie. We found it to be a good deal for the money. It was very clean and the staff were quite friendly. The suite is well equipped with a fridge, stove, dishwasher and a washer/dryer combo. The location was perfect for us, we walked all the downtown area - Stanley Park, Gastown, Chinatown, etc. Use a map and you will see that it is an easy area to get around by foot.
