penticton v kelowna

We will be visiting the Okanagan Valley, probably for 4 nights, in August 2013.

We can't decide whether to stay in Penticton or Kelowna and would welcome advice please.

We are fit and active early 60s who enjoy walking, golf and wine tasting, can only take a limited amount of sitting around doing nothing

Penticton definitely.

K-town has become a Big City with all the attendant ills thereof.

The week ending with the triathlon in Penticton gets booked up VERY far in advance. (It was an Ironman race but starting this year, has a different "brand" affiliation - but is still a big event.) Kelowna gets very booked up on the weekend of the Apple Triathlon.

Penticton is smaller with less to do but has better wine tasting on the Naramata Bench.

Kelowna has much more of a city feel..the golf is way better in Kelowna...more quality courses, but also more expensive courses.

Both destinations are very busy in August...

Having lived in both places, Penticton, hands down. Smaller, more friendly atmosphere. Two beautiful beaches and lakes.

As noted the Naramata Bench is a great spot for wine tasting. You can walk the Kettle Valley Railway from town to Naramata. From Okanagan Lake to Skaha Lake is 4 miles and is any easy walk.

Close to Oliver with it's great wineries.

summerland/penticton area over kelowna, in my opinion. kelowna is much busier/congested.

you can get a hotel in penticton or check out vrbo.com for some nice beach front properties.

burrowing owl winery is a nice place for lunch. it's between summerland and kelowna. naramata is a great place to go for a few hours. sun-oka beach is one of my favorites which is just a 10-15 minute drive outside of penticton...by summerland. the kettle valley rail trip is a nice way to spend a few hours.

if you decide to choose kelowna...i would make sure to spend a day in the vernon area. love lake kalamalka - nice restaurant right on the beach. also a day walking around the silver star area is very nice.

book soon for either location as it's a busy time of year.

Thank you. In the end we chose Kelowna and have booked a bed and breakfast, but will now make sure we follow up your suggestions re Vernon etc.

If you change your mind to Penticton be sure to drive south for 45 minutes and visit us is Osoyoos, World class 36 holes of golf and enough wineries to make it worthwhile to spend the night. And just a note to poster 5, Burrowing Owl is south of Penticton by about a half hour, between Oliver and Osoyoos.

If you are going to drive anywhere from Kelowna, go south toward Penticton. This is a very lovely drive along the lake and you could visit Penticton for the day. There will be lots of fruit available at roadside stands in August.

While Kalamalka lake to the north IS really beautiful, Vernon is not.....It is not built on the lake and has nothing going for it. Much better to do a day going to the south.
