Recommend some stops along the Vancouver to Kamloops route?

We are heading to Kamloops from Vancouver at the end of the month and would like to break up the 3.5 hr drive with some stops for a meal and some sightseeing along the way. It's a route that we haven't driven before, so would really appreciate some recommendations. It looks like we will be taking Hwy #1, then Hwy #3E, and finally Hwy#5N on our way to Kamloops. Thanks.

Hi SJunie ~

You will take 2 hours to drive from Vancouver to Hope. You could visit Fort Langley, Minter Gardens, Harrison Hot Springs, and maybe you could look into Hells Gate Tram, which is up Hwy 1 north of Hope. This much you can do from Vancouver any day of the week.

Then from Hope to Kamloops, you drive on Hwy 5. It is a functional, no frills, "commuter" highway with no real opportunities to stop, visit anything or sightsee. There are no cafes, coffee shops, or gas stations. This highway was purpose built to create a fast, un-tourist route to the coast in good time. Merritt would be your first place to stop for a meal.

Thank you, Multi, for the tip about HWY 5 being a non-stop hwy. We got to make sure that gas tank is full and the bladders are empty before we head onto it!

Just beyond Hope on Highway 5, there is Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, with the Othello Tunnels (never been there, but highly recommended by friends) -

(There is also one all-important "bladder stop" (AKA "rest area") about half way between Hope and Merritt - watch for the signs.)

Thanks, Itchy. The Othello Tunnels look like a good place to stretch our legs and get some circulation going before continuing on our trip.

Highway 1 up the Fraser Canyon is a bit more scenic (IMO, although the Coquihalla Pass is quite pretty. However its DULL going once you get into Merritt) if you have the time. Agree that the Hope area with the attractions around there is the logical stopping point.

Note that Mufti mentions Minter Gardens, which are closing at the end of this season. Haven't checked the dates.

Minter is closing in October. The OP is travelling next week, so good to go.
