self tour holiday in September

We are looking at a self tour holiday in BC in early September for around 14 nights, cant decide between a car hire or a motor home holiday.

We want a few days in Vancouver city for a couple of nights followed by a self drive tour for around 10 nights. Looking at touring Vancouver island but wondering if 10 nights is too long for Vancouver island! don't want any internal flights so any suggestions would be most welcome.

10 days on Vancouver Island in September with an RV sounds perfect! Its a wonderful time of year and the island needs at LEAST 10 days to be seen. Two weeks is not too long, especially in an RV. Don't take the RV across on the ferry - mega expensive. Find an RV rental out of Nanaimo or Victoria and do your loop from there.

Try 2 or 3 nights in Goldstream Provincial park. You can actually ride bikes along the Galloping Goose trail from there to get into Victoria, so you don't need to move the RV. Then head up around Sooke and spend a night along Juan de Fuca provincial park somewhere, then head around towards Duncan and spend a night or two around the Parksville area before heading across to Uclulet/Tofino for at least 3 nights (four is better - note that camping in this area books up MONTHS in advance. Book early...like by March). Finally head to the north island, more places to see than you have nights for. There's the Comox Valley and Strathcona Provincial park, the Campbell River area, and finally you really must make time to see the north island around Port McNeil and Telegraph Cove. Again, at least 3 nights here.

10 days on VI would be too long for me. Not that there are not plenty of places to see, but moving about means doubling back since there are few main roadways.

And I could easily spend 10 days on the island but without the RV! Much easier to get around by car and lots of reasonably priced accommodation. All depends on what you want to see/ do..hiking, fishing, animal watching, beach combing, exploring wineries and small community markets, lunch at the Crow and Gate pub, another lunch in Coombs, , walking the loop trail at Englishman Falls River Park, checking out the returning salmon at Qualicum fish hatchery, doing a day trip from Port McNeil to Alert Bay, visiting Fort Rupert to see carvers like Calvin Hunt....just a few of the many options and things we do/ have done on the island..and haven't even mentioned staying at Point No Point and exploring China Beach and French Beach. Plus add in Tofino/Uclulet....

Vancouver to Victoria is easy to do without a car: Pacific Coach Lines, 4 hours CBD to CBD. Vancouver to Nanaimo is not as easy to do without a car. Public Transit for an hour to the ferry, 1.5 hours on the ferry, 10-15 min public transit or taxi into Nanaimo.

I would suggest you rent a car when you are ready to leave Vancouver and return it to Vancouver. You could consider 2 nights Victoria, 3 nights Tofino, 1 night on the way to north Island for 3 nights: one of Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, 1 night or perhaps 0 nights all the way back to Vancouver, which would take approx 8 hours, including the hour's wait for the ferry. Start with Victoria, the city and end with north Island the wilderness, or vice versa.

You will want to spend the night before your flight on the Vancouver side and not be travelling on a ferry on the day of your flight, IMO.

You could do 14 nights on Vancouver Island quite nicely with about 4 stopping over locations. Wonderful place.
