Jasper to Vancouver

Hello,

We are travelling in Canada 19th - 30th June and at one point will travel from Jasper to Vancouver, we believe this is approx. 11 hours drive which is manageable for us, however, would like your thoughts on whether to travel straight to Vancouver and have an extra day there or if it would be better to take our time and visit places on route with an overnight stop somewhere?

We look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Secondly I have heard that there may be lots of mosquitos around, is this the case? We are travelling, Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper and Vancouver.

Many thanks in advance for your recommendations and advice.

There are not very many mosquitoes around yet, here in the Rockies.... there are a few, of course, but the season for them here in the mountains doesn't really get going until sometime after the first few days of July. (They are usually not a problem on Canada Day, July 1st, but seem to come out a few days later.) How much rain we get through June will determine how numerous they are but so far, it doesn't appear we will have the swarms of biblical proportions that we had last year (after triple the usual amount of rain we normally get in June).

There is a lot of beautiful scenery between the Rockies and Vancouver, and stopping over just makes the trip more enjoyable, imo.... as well as giving you the opportunity to stop and see something rather than just driving through. However, if you go by the shorter route (west from Jasper, hwy 16 to #5, and then continue on #5, the Coquihalla highway once you get south of Kamloops), I believe it's only about 8 to 10 hours of driving. Also, with the time change, you will "gain back" one hour.

Thanks very much for your reply.... Phew am I glad about the mosquito's!

Thanks for your tips on the drive we have decided to take our time and stay over somewhere on route, we are in holiday after all so no need to rush 😊

With time no problem would you recommend the shorter trip or the longer one? (Which I'm guessing is back down ice fields park way and going along through Yoho Np way?)

Thanks again.

If you can do the Icefields Parkway a second time, you would not regret it. Jasper down to Revelstoke for the night, then on to Vancouver. Both legs about 5.5 hours driving, stops extra. Hands down more scenic than Hwy 16 and then 5 down to Kamloops. This would give you the option of splitting the attractions over the two days as well as allow you to revisit an attraction if the weather is better on the second go round. It would also put you close to Yoho with Emerald Lake, Takakkaw Falls and the Spiral Tunnel.
