Destination Vancouver to Ft McMurray. Vancouver to Jasper via Hwy 5, via Hwy 16 to Edmonton, via Hwy 63 to Ft McMurray during spring break, 2nd half of March. Any tips about road condition & hotel/lodging for family? Thanks

Welcome to the forum shamir ~

Suggest you fly.

17 hours solid driving under normal conditions, stops extra, one way.

You'd want winter tires, the ones with the snowflake inside the mountain outline.

Have a Plan B and C, be flexible, be prepared to stay over an extra day until a storm passes, let people know where you plan to be each day.

I don't think you will have any competition for hotels, you just need to plan how far you want to drive in a day and then find a place at the end of that day.

How long are you planning to spend on the drive? You mention a family, and I assume you have a specific reason for going to Fort MacMurray, so I'm guessing that flying the whole family there is not a practical option for you.

Spring break is still pretty early for this trip, and Mufti has given you good advice regarding the need to be flexible with your planning and hold off on travel if the weather is bad.

Typical drive from Vancouver to Jasper has a stop in Clearwater, just because its a convenient mid-way point. People often stop in Kamloops, which is the bigger center, but a bit too close to Vancouver to really be practical. Suggest you spend a night in Jasper, because its just so pretty, although accommodations would be a bit more expensive there.

And then I don't know...

The final stretch of your journey, Hwy 63, has the reputation of being Canada's most dangerous highway. Another good reason to fly instead of driving, if at all possible.
