Drive from Calgary Airport to Jasper

We will be staying in Jasper the end of August. Are there any side trips driving from the Calgary Airport to Jasper that are worth stopping for?

Banff and Lake Louise are both on the route between Calgary and Jasper... will you be visiting them later in your holiday? It's approximately five hours' of driving between Calgary airport and Jasper, although the Icefields Parkway portion of the drive (from Lake Louise on) can take a full day in itself, with all the scenic stops. However, if you will be driving south again to Banff/Lake Louise after you leave Jasper, you can visit some of the stops on your northbound journey, and some southbound.

Hi cappymickey and thanks for your question. Please don't be offended, but yours is one of those questions that we giggle at just a little bit when we receive.

That's because there is non-stop incredible scenery in the area - as you will be traveling through an immense and beautiful National Park and you could spend many days/weeks exploring the area. The highlights are Banff, the Bow Valley Parkway and Lake Louise. But save them for another day. Here's what I would recommend:

If you are traveling to Jasper from the Calgary Airport, it's going to be a long and tiring (but very scenic and enjoyable) drive. As the scenery will stop you dead in your tracks on the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 North) I would encourage you to stay on the highway until you turn on the Highway 93 North. From there, you can make all of the stops you want as you make your way along the Icefields Parkway to Jasper. Trust us when we say it will take a long time and you will be making many, many "sidetrips" as you drive along this incredible scenic highway. Focus your attention on this road alone on this day.

I'm also hoping you are returning to Banff and Lake Louise to spend some time - because at minimum it's nice to have a day in each place. You might want to make a quick lunch stop at the small mall in Lake Louise, before you begin your drive up the Icefields Parkway as food services are limited along this incredible drive.

Enjoy your drive and please, come back and visit Banff and Lake Louise when you have the time.

Great, thanks. Yes, we will be staying in Banff for a few days after a few days in Jasper. What about the altitude; how high is it?

The town of Jasper is at about 3500 feet above sea level (the same elevation as Calgary), the town of Banff is at about 4500. The village of Lake Louise is at about 5000 ft, and the lake itself is at about 5600 feet. The highest point on the Icefield Parkway is Bow Summit, at about 6800 feet. Sunwapta Pass is almost that high as well.

Some great tips here as we plan to do this trip next Fall. We plan to arrive at Calgary airport and stay overnight in Calgary then drive from Calgary up to Jasper area for 3 days then back to Banff for 3 days then back to the airport and home!
