World travellers fraternity hostel

Hi there

I am looking to stay in jasper for 2 nights in February. I have found on hostel world a hostel called world travellers fraternity but can't find any reviews/information about it on trip advisor. Had anyone stayed there? Just need to know it exists and ok to stay at. Thanks

You're right to be careful, as I have seen some listings on hostelworld for businesses that closed long ago. World Travellers Fraternity has a Facebook page that describes themselves as a B&B in Jasper:

Here's a news item about them:

It is legit. It is technically a "private home accommodation" and has been inspected by Parks Canada and licensed by the town of Jasper. Unlike most PHAs, they offer hostel-style accommodation instead of hotel or B&B style accommodation. It is a house in a residential neighbourhood, with two rooms licensed, one with (as far as I know) 6 dorm beds, and the other is a double room (for 2 people). Both rooms are in the basement (but meet building and fire codes, ie. windows, exits etc.) The reason you are probably having trouble finding out much about them is that they only just opened this past summer.

They made the front page of one of our local Jasper papers this week, and you can read it online: http://www.thejasperlocal.com/news.html (On edit: oops, sorry, C_W, I see you already posted that link.)

Krp, any updates about these folks? I see their FB page is not active, but that doesn't mean too much.

Still operating. I'm not sure what else to update - ? From what I understand, they are quite busy, since there are no other accommodations in town where a visitor can get a bed for $33. Dorm accommodation won't appeal to everyone, of course, but they are filling a market niche - up until they opened, backpacker travellers only had the out-of-town hostel options. (The closest two hostels are Whistlers and Maligne Canyon, both about 10 or 11 km from town. Whistlers does operate a daily shuttle in and out of town, but it's not a terribly convenient option for anyone wanting any night-life.)

However, I should note that in the winter/shoulder seasons (mid-October through mid-May), there are other private home accommodations in the $40 to $60 range, a private room usually with a shared bathroom. These tend not to be in much demand because of the shared bathroom, so often the other room that shares the bathroom is not rented and you essentially have a private bathroom. There is a vacancy list posted at the Visitor Centre (in winter, it's weekly, in summer, daily) where hosts write up their availability; courtesy phones are provided for visitors to make enquiries. There is also an online availability report, showing ten days forward from the present, although it is not used as much as the one at the visitor centre: http://stayinjasper.com/avcal/report.asp
