Travelling to the Canadian Rockies in June - travel advice

My wife and myself are planning to travel to the Canadian Rockies in the first two weeks of June from the UK, and are looking to travel advice.

We are thinking of flying either into Calgary and out of Edmonton, or the other way around. Is it better to manage this one way or the other? (Flights are not yet booked, but will need to be shortly).

Also, for viewing great scenery, is it best to hire a car and self-drive? Any particular type of car needed for this time of year?

Any general advice on places to visit/hotels would be gratefully received.

Thank you for looking at this question

Best wishes

Welcome to the TripAdvisor forums!

I would suggest flying in and out of Calgary, which is only 1.5 hours from the mountains and it's a pretty drive (imo). (And yes, self-drive is the way to go - there is limited public transportation, and the parks are large areas with scenic attractions very spread out. A regular car will be fine - no need for 4wd or AWD.) The drive from Edmonton to Jasper is four hours long and quite dull, except for the 30 minutes in the mountains. Driving Calgary - Banff - Jasper - Banff - Calgary gives you two drives on the incredibly scenic Icefields Parkway, which has different views in each direction (and also gives you "insurance" to see things hopefully at least once, in case one day is overcast or raining).

Have a read through some of the compiled trip reports here: tripadvisor.ca/Travel-g659487-c123791/Canadi… and then when you have a proposed itinerary and specific questions, we'll be able to help you fine tune it.

I would also recommend posting your budget and the type of accommodation that you are expecting (Rustic, Luxury? Kitchenette) so we can offer better suggestions. As well, are you hikers? Or more of a casual walker? Are you looking to do things like white water rafting? Horseback riding?

I would second what krp said. Self drive is the way to go, and the drive between Jasper and Banff is spectacular enough that is is worth the back track. There is a full listing if Banff and Lake Louise hotels avaliable at www.banfflakelouise.com. June is getting into high season in the rockies so it's highly reccomended to book your accommodations in Advance.

There are lots of acivities avaliable in June, but be advised that soem of the higher elevation trail may still be under snow at that point. If you plan on doing any hiking, be sure to consult the Parks Canada trail report before setting out for the day.

Most of the attractions will be open for summer operations at that point. The town of Banff has numerous activities, both guided and self guided, ranging from short walks, to bus tours and adrenaline activities such as Via Ferrata, white water rafting and much more. If you are interested in some of these excursions, check out either Discover Banff Tours (www.banfftours.com) or Banff Adventures (www.banffadventures.com). Both of these companies are booking agents for numerous activities in the area.

Thank you all for your very helpful replies! Based on this excellent feedback, we have changed our plans to now fly in and out of Calgary.

Now comes the fun part of deciding what to do - we're perusing the above information and links, and looking forward to a great time.

Thanks again!
