Generally speaking, skiing should be okay, but not great. Of course, it would likely be better the earlier in April you go. There should still be some snow falling in the mountains (and you might luck out with a big dump of snow), but the best part of skiing at that time of year is the warm weather and sunny skies. Don't forget your sunscreen!
Skiing at around Easter is very hit and miss because of the variable weather. My family likes to ski around that time every year because our kids have a long school break. For a number of years, it has been quite successful. The weather is mild and there is snow, although, often icy. However, this year, by early April, there was no skiing around Banff, only Lake Louise. You will have to be prepared to take your chances that there might not be good skiing in April.
What do you mean there's no skiing around Banff in April??? Sunshine Village is near Banff, and open until the May long weekend!
I was there April 15th weekend and told not to bother going there because the skiing was terrible. The only recommended skiing was Lake Louise.
Ummm, Sunshine Village is still open this weekend (May 14-15). Li Li, at the very least Sunshine will be open, and still with decent skiing in April. I'm not sure when Easter is next year, but the earlier the better.
As an Ex-Banffite, I can assure you skiing will be absolutely Fantastique anytime you go in the spring...the weather is warm, you can sit on the patio, have a Big Rock Traditional Ale and bbq burger....sweet! Sunshine always has a ton of snow...Lake Louise, not so much...but the spring is still the absolute best time to go...to either place (but I like Sunshine better (less rocks! in the spring)...
Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts! It looks like skiing in April in Alberta will be at the least, better than peak season in the Australian ski fields!
