USD or Mexican Pesos for Tips, Trips and Souvenirs

Travelling from the UK and staying at the EDSS from 9th June for our 20th Wedding Anniversary, just wondered which currency would be best? Getting excited now, check the reviews several times a week for the very informative messages. Already contacted resort direct in relation to our Swim Up Room :o)

Also there is a law which tracks US dollars. You are only allowed to exchange 150 per day or 1500 per month.

You can search this and see it is not a fairy tale.

In Puerto Vallarta many hotels such as Riu will not exchange USD

Pesos are better for tips. It saves the locals the hassle of going to a bank to exchange them.

Thanks for your informative post. We stay at AIs but always like to tip bartenders, waiters, etc (tips range from $2.00-$5.00). Haven't been back to Mexico since 2011 and we weren't sure if it's best to convert dollars to pesos for tips.

Captain Quickie here. Sundog, since many industries do trade imports that are priced in dollars, the Govt. has designated an exchange rate to make the conversion as if one would have to purchase Dollars with the Pesos received. The approved rate site is as follows:

sat.gob.mx/sitio_internet/…

This is also known as the inter-bank exchange rate that ATM's are suppose to take into consideration when pulling pesos with a foreign bank card.

This is NOT the rate that banks, exchange houses, restaurants nor businesses give when paying for items or services priced in Pesos with Dollars.

Eight years ago when we were in Mexico...the staff were very happy to have american dollars and we found that even when shopping they already had things priced in american dollars....have things changed now?
