USD or Mexican Pesos for Tips, Trips and Souvenirs

Travelling from the UK and staying at the EDSS from 9th June for our 20th Wedding Anniversary, just wondered which currency would be best? Getting excited now, check the reviews several times a week for the very informative messages. Already contacted resort direct in relation to our Swim Up Room :o)

We always take US$ but your money will go further if you are using Pesos for trips and souvenirs

You will certainly need Pesos or Sterling for the Exit Tax unless they have started to accept US$ again

Both US and pesos are widely accepted. You will need pesos for your departure tax. That said if you are coming from the UK you may as well bring pesos. A friend from the UK posted this advice

"At the front lobby, exchange rates aren't that competative as in all hotels. The atm machine does have a better rate BUT UK banks will charge heavily for overseas use. the best solution we have come up with is... *A small amount of dollars in low denominations for tipping.( £200 for example) * We then bring a larger amount of Peso's in cash changed in the UK ( the room safes are very secure) *travellers chq's - bring sterling not dollar = or you will pay once in the UK, and then again in mexico to exchange. you are better exchanging outside of resort, "

Buy peso's before you leave , or get them from an ATM in Mexico. Why convert to US and then loose again when you spend it in Mexico. Lots of folks use US for tips , but peso's work just as well. The resort we stayed at in Jan/Feb didn't even accept US$ for payment or purchases , the ATM there dispensed pesos with just a $3.50 transaction fee .

For example , colectivo is $ 3.50 US or 30 peso's ( about $2.70 )

Go with Pesos for the small to mid priced items, remember, the staff who work at the resorts do not get paid much, and often work long hours. Why give dollars that they end up having to exchange to pesos for their own use (not to mention the exchange fee they will have to pay). Also, I often see groundspeople who work very hard to keep the resort looking pristine, but never see anyone tip them. Try reserving some tips for these folks, and watch it brighten their day.

Captain Quickie here.

If your tours/ trips are priced in dollars, bring dollars for those tours or trips. Tipping and souvenirs Pesos.

ATM Exchange rate is the inter bank exchange rate, so, even with the fee's both here and at home, if you pull the max (not a little here and a little there) you will get a better deal.

Happy sailing!!!

As the OP is from GB ( Quickie - take note) , best to use pesos , or use Credit cards on any rates not favourable

Captain Quickie here. My wife is British and we bank with Barclay's Bank, So, the fee's and exchange rate difference are taken into account. Not all businesses accept credit cards. In fact, many businesses do not.

Pesos work best for the locals. They don't have to hassle with the conversion. Besides that is their currency and it sometimes feels a little arrogant to use us dollars..like their currency is not good enough. Skip the souvenirs, again they need the money not gifts..

Captain Quickie here. I am a local and business owner (yes, Mexican born Citizen and local experience for over 30 years). We do not get offended with people paying in dollars, my prices are in USD. I would like to point out though, foreign coins are not accepted locally (neither by businesses nor banks). I truly believe the souvenirs the original poster is referring to are the ones they want to purchase while visiting to take back home! USD are accepted at the local supermarkets at a very generous exchange rate, so, it is no hassle at all for us to use.
