Surf fishing is great in the Cabo - San Jose del Cabo area from January thru April when the Sierras are running. It's a shame more people don't know about this because it's worth a trip to Cabo just for the surf fishing. No fishing license needed. Sierras are great eating, especially in ceviche. They look like barracudas with tiny sharp teeth, about two feet long.

Bring lots of 2-4 oz. chrome Krocodiles, swivels, foot-long steel leaders and 20 lb. line. A seven foot rod is limiting, nine is better, eleven to thirteen best. Fish dawn and dusk. Walk out as far as possible, cast out and retrieve quickly. Work your way up the beach and watch for baitfish jumping. Once you realize what you're looking at, you'll see them, like ghosts, racing across the face of the breakers chasing baitfish. It's a thrill. You'll lose a few because they are terrific fighters but when you beach your first one it will be the highlight of your vacation.
