Hundreds of thousands of people travel by bus all over Mexico every day - it is the main form of long-distance transport. Yes, occasionally incidents occur but it is generally regarded as a very safe form of travel.

I am given to understand on reasonable authority, from Mexicans in the know, that the bus routes to the border from San Miguel are under the control of La Familia, since they now also run the cross-border trade in ilegales. This might make one think twice about taking that route! Besides, the Americanos bus that runs across the border is said to be slow and quite uncomfortable. Better to take a bus to the border, walk across and then pick up a decent overnight service to Querétaro.

Thank you! I appreciate the info. We rode the bus from SAT to SMA and back about eight years ago. We loved SMA and enjoyed the trip even tho it was overnight. Things change and you hear so much. Really enjoy all the info on the forum and hope to visit SMA again soon.
