Is this a silly route

I have done the garden and R62 on a previous trip. So this time staying in Kalk bay for a couple od days and then spending a night in Prince Albert. Thought go via Franskhoek then upto N1 stop enroute at Matjiesfontein which looks lovely and then onto PA Seems faster route with a couple of interesting stops. Day two: From PA down the Swartberg pass to Knysna. Day 5 To Aldo NP day 6 Port elizabeth and day 7 flight from PE.

Not a silly route at all.

Seeing that, it seems, you are looking for something different why not visit the Karoo National Park after PA, that is up to the N1 and Beaufort West. From there go to Graaf Reinet for a few nights, home of the Camdeboo National Park. BTW Graaf Reinet is the 4th oldest town in SA.

From GR it is a easy drive down to Port Elizabeth.

Graaf Reinet has more heritage sites than any other South Africa town. Over 220.

Many magnificent examples of Cape Dutch Architecture, and several interesting museums.

Agree - its not a bad route at all - prince Albert is lovely for a night and the Swartberg pass stunning. An extra suggestion if you have the time is to go to Calitzdorp from the Swartberg pass - beautiful route through an area called Groenkloof. Otherwise going via Oudtshoorn is faster if you need to get to Knysna that day.

The other suggestion to go to GR is also interesting - if you consider that you could also visit Nieu bethesda - although thats taking you very much East and inland away from Knysna (if thats your final destination).

Thank you for your suggestions. The Groenkloof sounds interesting and fits better with our timeframe

the Camdeboo area (Graaff-Reinet, Valley of Desolation and Nieu-Bethesda) is worthwhile

I really appreciate all the advise. I could not find Groenkloof, suggested by Hatter but the valley of Groenfontein?

Sorry - thats it - Groenfontein! Its a nice scenic route and Calitzdorp is great for wine tasting and especially Port.
