I am booking my honeymoon for my fiance and I in June. I have looked all over the world, from the Caribbean to Bora Bora, for the perfect place. I think we have settled on Antigua, with the assistance of Tripadvisor and all of the posts I've read about it. It seems to have a good mix of everything we want. I am looking for some guidance deciding between Galley Bay, Curtain Bluff, or Hermitage Bay. They are all going to cost about the same, for the rates I am getting They are all all-inclusive. I have read great reviews or heard great things about all of these places. Here's what I do know: Galley bay is supposed to be a beatiful beach, with beautiful water; the rooms seemed very average. Curtain Bluff is supposed to be classy -- maybe a little too classy (snooty), but really nice. Hermitage Bay is so new that there is only one review, but I hear it's going to be great by June??

Could you PLEASE give me any other pro's and con's you have about any of these three? We are looking based on the following criteria (in this order):

1. Beach / Water - looking for the most beautiful, calm, clear water we have ever seen, with long white-sand beach. I want the room to be as close to the beach as possible.

2. Rooms - I'm looking for 4*+ accomodations. It' doesn't have to be a Four Seasons, but I would like something fairly modern with a spacious bathroom.

3. Food - We like to eat! We are looking for multiple restaurants on location, with a lot to choose from. We will dine off the resort a few times, but most of the dining wil be done on-site.

4. Resort Atmosphere / Ambiance - Fun, lively, and not dead at 10:00PM. We certainly want to relax, but we want the ability to go to the bar at night and meet some fun people and have some drinks.

5. Location - We want to be close enough to town where we can go have a night out if we want to. I'll be renting a car, so we will have the option. Close Proximity to other beaches and sights is a plus.

Probably most importly though, is to feel like we really got our money's worth and got to see an amazingly beautiful place.

Any help you can offer will be most appreciated! Sorry it was so long.

-Kevin

Hi

Basically your question is too detailed and you are unlikely to get anyone who has stayed at all these resorts to answer because Curtain Bluff is an excusive resort and the clientele return year after year and are unlikely to use tripadvisor!. Many people will have stayed at Galley Bay but Hermitage has just opened so you are unlikely to get a comparisson.

My suggestion is you re-phrase your questions or as you see you will not get an answer.

Best wishes - Mun

All 3 properties will be quiet at night. You need to venture off to town after 10 for action. I can say the food at Galley Bay is great. The beach can be wavy and rough and is pretty long for walks. Curtain Bluff has a high repeater clientel. They have one of the best wine cellars in the Caribbean. It has a club like feel. They have two beaches, one a bit rougher.

I saw Hermitage in Aug. 2005 when it was being built. It will no doubt be very private and secluded.

Currently staying at Hermitage Bay. It is a beautful place secluded and exclusively luxurious. Small and private. Staff is lovely food is fantastic but do not look for extra curricular activities. this place is for romance, peace and quiet. The hotel has only opened so the staff pays you all the attention you need and the hotel isn't full yet. beeing used to ***** bc of work, I can garantee the standard is high. No geesers here, no kids, and all inclusive. The management is excellent. A couple just got married on the beach here. The only thing I would check is the weather forecast as all we have had is rain and wind.....

I am considering Curtain Bluff, but I don't want to feel out-of-place. I'm hearing this from everyone.

I have already put a deposit on Galley Bay. The 2 things that concern me are:

1. rough water - I keep hearing that the beach is rough most of the year.

2. Not as luxurious as the others - I know Curtain Bluff is supposed to be classy and Hermitage is new, with IPods in the room and whatnot. I've heard Galley Bay doesn't even have TV's in the room -- that worries me a little. We are not going to do a lot of tv watching, but we want the opportunity from time-to-time (if the weather is bad, etc.)

any thoughts?

We were at Hermitage in January. The beach/water is excellent. Hermitage is in a secluded cove with no other buildings in view, it really feels like you're on your own little island! It's white sand in parts and other parts is like ground-up shells, but it's fine to walk on, not sharp or horrible.

The rooms were fabulous. They have beach cottages with an indoor seating area and porch, that are right on the beach, but we stayed in a hillside cottage (they're massive, with huuuuge luxurious bathrooms, including the biggest bath I've ever been in! I'd imagine the beach cottages have the same bath!) with plunge pool and we loved it.

Food was great - and yes, we like to eat too!! It's all inclusive, but all cooked to order - no buffets in sight! You can either eat in the restaurant or they'll bring it to your room and set it up on the balcony (we often had lunch in our room). You could, if you felt so inclined, spend your whole day eating!! There's afternoon tea, with cake and club sandwiches should you wish it, although we only had it one day when we missed lunch.

We were after somewhere quiet and romantic and that is what Hermitage Bay is. There's other folks in the bar to talk to, come 10pm, checking out Ike and Dexter's cocktail list, but it's not a big busy buzzy place. We didn't leave the resort, apart from going on a couple of boat trips. The hotel can organise stuff for you if you wish. A couple of the other couples took the helicopter ride round the island. My partner went diving. There's a shuttle that'll take you to St Johns or Jolly Harbour for shopping on certain days.

One thing Hermitage is, is amazingly beautiful. That's not an opinion, that's a fact.

Hope that helps!

How far from St. Johns is Hermitage? Would we be able to drive into town a couple of nights if we wanted to? Should we rent a car? Is the road to the resort still pretty bad?

Thanks

I don't think it's far - maybe 20-30 mins drive. We went out on the boat and saw it down the coast! The hotel does shuttle trips to St Johns on a couple of days each week, so if you wanted to go, rather than renting, you could just go via the shuttle.

The road to the resort was levelled off with gravel while we were there, so it's bumpy, but negotiable. Our ride back to the airport was in a minivan rather than a 4x4, so go figure. You just have to go a bit slow! I can't say I'd want to do it in the dark in a rental car, mind!

I also had a few questions about Hermitage Bay and was wondering if someone could answer them. I am thinking of going in August.

1. Do cottages have windows that open/close (not just shutters with screens)?

2. Do beach cottages have plunge pools?

3. How bad is the mosquito/sandflea situation? Can you sit outside after dark? I know Bunnykins 007 said that the beach cottages have screened in porches. What about the hillside cottages?

4. Are reservations required for dinner or do you come and go as you please?

I actually emailed the resort a few days ago, but did not get a response yet. I would appreciate answers to any of these questions!

Kn -- all the rooms at Galley Bay have TV. The rooms have a rustic feel but are clean and comfortable. The sea can be rough there but I went in JUne and we could swim in the sea with no difficulty most days. My partner also went snorkelling around the bay. Its not the Maldives but its ok and were some interesting fish.
