Has anybody been to sian kaan. I have read about the reserve and was wondering what visitors to the area have thought about it. I found a site on the internet that books trips to the area, is it worth the drive.

I was there last week and it is an incredible reserve, First you must know that the site is clean and if you go early in the moring (we were there at 8:30am) you will see many bird feeding. The reserve is reputed in having over 365 species of bird, a small but interesting Mayan site (Muyil) a fantastic lagoon and a real live Mayan village.

Please know that the reserve is the jungle, therefore bring bug repellant, also stay on the path, there are some dangers. Also, I wouldn't go witout a guide.

If you stop in Tulum Pueblo, you can arrange for a day at the reserve, they do a tour of the site (very small and very quick) a boat ride on the lagoon and explain about Mayan history and finaly a tour at the Mayan village (very important to know that you are not permitted to take pictures at the village, the elders do not allow pictures of the temple).

Excellent response, Dan.

Definately use a guide. We were walking around w/o one and a chemchem tree dripped onto my son's wrist. The sap burns your skin and causes blisters...it took us a few days to figure this out.

Thanks Dan for the information. I was looking on the internet and found a tour agency in cancun that will pick up at the resort and take you to Sian kaan. Tour starts at 8a.m. so I will get to see the birds. The tour also includes a tour, lunch than to Allen punta and from there you board a boat out to the ocean and snorkle on the reef. The trip for the whole day is 110US each.
