What is the best way to get from Cabanas Copal to Coba ruins? Are there local guides available? Is it possible to visit a Maya village in the area or is this just considered intrusive?

I stayed at Copal last spring, and it was actually pretty easy to take the public bus to Coba. From Copal, take a taxi into town to the bus station. There are several buses a day to Coba, and the buses are very nice. I was expecting something like a school bus, but they are air-conditioned, with plush seats and very professional drivers, yet very affordable. The bus let us off a few blocks from the entrance to Coba, and since there were many tourists on the bus we all walked together.
At Coba, there are tour guides available. It was a pretty cool place.
When we went to Tchinzen Itza a few days later, we made the mistake of signing up for one of the tour buses. It was 5 times the price, we were shuttled around to other tourist traps, and didn't have much time at the ruins. In hindsight, I wish we'd taken a public bus there as well.
Unfortunately, one of my few complaints about Copal is that they couldn't give us any info on the bus system. But the schedules are posted in the window of the bus station, so as long as you check it out beforehand, I think the bus is they way to go.
Have a great time!

We visited Coba and a Mayan village in September via an organized tour if that helps
We had a taxi driver take us to Coba-wait while we visited the ruins and then he took us to a village on the way home that had different items to sell. We went to the front (outside area) of our resort the night before and asked for a driver that spoke English and asked what he would charge us for the day. I think it was $80.00 for the entire day-we were traveling with another couple and the amount was worth it. I think we tipped him $20.00 because he was such a great tour guide also! You will be able to get a tour guide at the ruins, walk the ruins, rent a bicycle........We just walked to the main ruin and climbed to the top.....if this is your first time you are in for the most spectacular sight! We also liked getting our own driver becuase we were able to be there right when the ruins opened and we were the only ones at the top of the tallest ruin...as we were leaving the buses were arriving....as were the crouds...it really made the trip worth it getting there early..... as you climb to the top if you are in a croud with people all around you it is pretty intimidating..but if you have the place to yourself it is great! good luck and have a great time!
I would actually recommend renting a car for just the day. It will probably cost about the same or less than a taxi, and you can make all the stops you want along the way.
There are lots of small towns between Tulum and Coba, along the highway, you will see lots of little shops and stands. The area is so touristy, your visit will be more welcomed than not!
Thanks for all the great tips!
