Changes at Cabanas Tulum

Wow! There are a lot of changes at CT. We were shocked. We stayed on Isla Mujeres this year and really missed Tulum, so we made a trip for the day. We loved Ziggy's so much last year we wanted to spend our day there. It had such a great beach club vibe!

We arrive to find everything changed. The vibe is so much more "formal," the menu has completely changed and, IMO, is more appropriate as a restaurant menu than a beach club menu. All our favorite dishes from last year are gone. The prices skyrocketed and are too expensive for beach club food.... and worst of all? The two for one drinks all day are eliminated. They only offer two for one in the bar and restaurant from 3-6. The whole experience was different, and for us, a huge disappointment!

Emilio no longer works there--and we were sad about that, too. Love Emilio!! :)

Perhaps these new owners are trying to appeal to customers who spend much more on holiday? I heard the room prices were really high now. We couldn't believe the prices! And the 'older' section was completely closed down. Is this section going to be reopened and still offered at a more reasonable rate?

We did see the new rooms and they are lovely, for sure. The entrance is so beautiful....I love the décor. But, overall, CT has changed is not really our "style" any more. And that makes me sad.

We stayed there in March - and would absolutely return, but only if the old section reopens and at a reasonable rate. The Beach is too high end for us - rates way too high. We paid USD178 for a beach front room in the old section - this is pretty much top of our budget and twice as much as any other accommodation we had in the Yucatan, but for the beach front accommodation with 24-hr electricity and AC at night, we were fine with it. Plus breakfast was great.

We liked the menu at the restaurant, but it was definitely on the pricey side - coming from CA, it was still relatively cheap for us, but it was not a bargain. We loved the bar and didn't mind the 2-for-1 only going for a few hours. We don't generally spend all afternoon drinking, so that was ok for us.

When we were there, they had the old lobby, which we liked. The new lobby was being built, but wasn't open yet. We like low-key, which is why we went to Tulum in the first place, so if the new lobby is too sleek, it won't really appeal to us.
