 Interaction with Monkeys

Hi Everyone,

Hope you can help me out.

We stayed at Bahia Principe Tulum in 2004 and there was a great place called Aktun Chen across the road where my daughter actually got to be in direct contact with a monkey. It is one of her fondest memories.

I heard you can no longer directly interact with them - there was problems with biting (never experienced any problems). Can someone who has been there recently let me know. Also, if someone has had a direct interaction with monkeys somewhere else, could you let me know where?

We are travelling to this area again in March.

Thanks

Texas

When travelling through Costa Rica I had numerous encounters with monkeys. It was to the point that I was no longer intrigued by them. The best place to get up close and personal with monkeys is the Manuel Antonio National Park, near the village of Quepos, on the Pacific coast. They are everywhere!!!!!!! I do not know if you were only inquiring about Mexico, but Costa Rica offers numerous opportunities to interact with monkeys (and other wildlife). What a lovely country it is.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. We are travelling to the Mayan Riveria this March, and this is the area we would like to interact with them.

Thanks!

We were at Actun Chen three days ago and you can not interact with the monkeys anymore, they are fenced in a large enclosure. Something to do with biting the tourists. Monkey bites can be serious so I assume they do not want problems.

Kathryn19007,

How was your excursion to Aktun Chen? Would you recommend doing it?

Thanks for your post.

When I first saw this topic, thought you were referring to a conversation with timeshare sales people!

Breesmom,

We enjoyed the caves. Found them interesting, our first time in a cave. Not expensive, about $25USD or so. Lewarned about some snakes, saw the monkeys, and saw a few bats in the caves. For a cheaper excursion we thought it was a good one. If the darn road wasn't so long to get in and out we would have walked back, but it is a LOONG way into the jungle!

As for TIMESHARES... we actually SUFFERED thru a time share presentation (Sunset Group) in order to get a free dolphin swim in Cozumel for our daughter. Got to love the freebies... haha

Good thing I looked this company up on the internet at the Coba as they are a horrid group that rip ppl off all the time!

Cheers,

Kathy

You are correct! Most timeshares are bad but Sunset is the worst of the worst!!

kathryn, I took my niece last year and she was able to interact with the monkeys. They were there to greet you and you could play with them (the spider monkeys) prior to going on the guided tour. Then, while on the tour, they brought us bananas for feeding time. My niece was only 5 and absolutely loved it.

Are you certain that this has changed? I'm sure if people were being bitten, that they would have to do something, but I would have been disappointed if I went back again.

I thought the tour was pretty cool and it's so reasonable too (very close to the Bahia Principe).
