Just read a review by Angienorthants about the Riu Tequila which was mostly very positive, but I have a question about the safes at the Tequila. Does anyone else feel that the safes could be updated or broken into. I couldn't quite get an opinion whether this person had the camera in the safe or not. I'm concerned because I'll have cameras and computer games and want to be safe as possible. Thanks for your input,John

John,

Couldn't tell either - I read the "Be Careful of your valuables when you are at dinner specially. We've learned that the hard way." as they left their camera on a table while grazing at the buffet. I've only stayed at one AI + some hotels in Cancun and the safes, while some times small, have always seemed secure to me. Of course, if some one has the master code/key or you don't lock it correctly..... I travel with lots of camera equipment and have never had anything stolen. I just follow the same rule - if I was staying in a hotel/travelling in NYC, how would I secure/safeguard my valuables?

We're going to this resort shortly, & I'll try to post some info on our return.

We had no problems with the safe or anything being stolen while we were there - we felt very safe and comfortable our whole time there. Unfortunately, leaving your camera on an empty table while going to the buffet is probably not the best idea, the resort has 664 rooms and there are people from all over the place, lots of different characters, including some that feel that they can take from others and not give it a second thought. Be alert, but not overly protective, you are there to relax!

We did lock our suitcases while we were there, just as a precaution, it made us feel that much more secure while we were out of the room. The safe didn't pose any problems for us, they give you the lock that fits into the safe along with the key - I have read other postings mentioning people who lost those keys and the safe/lock had to be drilled by a locksmith to get it opened, it didn't sound as though there were any master keys.

Hope that helps!

Ange

Ange,

Thanks so much for responding. Although I'm am very sorry about your experience with the stolen camera, after reading your post I feel secure about locking my valuables in the safe. It's a shame that people can't treat each other the way that we're supposed to, but something we unfortuneatly have to expect. Your TA friend, John

Just to clarify, it wasn't MY camera that was taken, another Ange with some bad luck, and perhaps a little carelessness as well!

The one thing I did mention is to lock the suitcases, which I hope you do too - not because I was scared, or worried that something would be taken, but just for my own peace of mind! We were very surprised how many people come and go in and out of your room during the day. We were there in the afternoon one day and the housekeeper was there, the mini-bar people came by to refresh stuff and a maintenance person stopped by to fix the window. Not to suggest that any of these people would take anything, but it just made gave us the peace of mind while we were at the beach, pool or on an excursion that our belongings were taken care of.

The safe itself is a little small, but fit our passports, wallets, extra cash, and served the purpose very well. Just be cautious of your surroundings (as you should anywhere in the world you travel) and have a great time!! :)

Ange

You are correct,I do have the wrong Ange in my follow up post. Sorry for the confusion. So at this point we are still surmising. Are the safes big enough to fit a hand held computer games plus digital camera and wallet in?Thanks,John

got2beme. The safes should be big enough for your needs.A laptop i couldnt guarantee but small(ish) cameras ,mobile phones, psp type games modules, wallets, passports, ect with a bit of careful stacking shouldnt be a problem. We had a great time at the Tequila and are really looking forward to our return.

It's good to see that people are asking these sorts of questions -- was the item locked in the room safe? was it left on a table (in an open area with many people moving around) while dining? -- etc. Of course it's terrible when someone's belongings are stolen while on vacation, but it seems the property can be blamed rather quickly and easily in some of these cases.

It's not unusual for my staff to report to me that the safe in such-and-such room was left open by the guests, with valuables on display, or to hear that guests left electronic equipment like cameras or other valuables such as wallets with cash/credit cards behind unattended on beach loungers, right in the middle of people walking up and down the beach.

Unfortunately this can be dangerous while on vacation just as it can be at home. Likewise it's not safe to automatically assume that other travellers at the same resort are not potential culprits in such cases, so even if you're inside your resort all the time, you know, it's not like you're inside your own home. It seems people don't want to consider such things while travelling but that may make them more susceptible...

FWIW!

Steve
