MOSQUITO BEACH HOTEL REVIEW
In the late 80's, Playa del Carmen was a sleepy little village with a population of 1,000. Somehow, Europeans discovered it and begin building mom-and-pop small beach hotels of about 12-30 units. Twenty years later, the town is losing that feeling as mega-resorts and developers are buying up those smaller hotels and demolishing them building mega condo complexes and resort hotels. The population is now 100,000 and I hear it is growing exponentially at 20% per year.
But the beaches are still beautiful and the town boasts about 200 hundred restaurants and entertainment bars all within walking distance. Sure it can get a little tacky but the entertainment variety is huge and where can you get all of that within 36 blocks with a great beach 1 block away? Only in Playa del Carmen.
Nestled within all this is the quant but high-designed Mosquito Beach Hotel. This hotel also boasts the post-modern part gothic design now copied worldwide after Philip Stark designed the Paramount Hotel in New York City in the mid 1990's. But it also throws in it's Mayan influence for a little flavor.
So what about this hotel? For the $160 per night I paid, I thought it was value. Also, I hear you may get a better rate by calling them yourself rather than going through Travelocity, etc. The hotel is right on the beach great with great beach service and day- open only restaurant which is good for us guests so it is quiet at night. The construction now appears finished for the hotel is in very good shape. It is beautiful and has a great pool. The staff are very nice and accomodating.
About construction noise. It is happening everywhere. The city is going through a drastic change. I barely heard it at the hotel. And that is one it's great qualities. For being on 8th Ave right in downtown and on the beach, it is quiet at the hotel at night.
I noticed a few guests were a little miffed by certain issues but they were not the responsibility of the hotel. Remember this is Mexico and sometimes things don't happen as expected.
I am a film cameraman and travel the world. It is always an adventure. I have stayed at 5 star hotels and at s#%&holes. I am actually quite demanding if I want to be. I am happy to report, yes, I would definitely go back there.
Only one thing. I think good design should be good functionality. I noticed that many of us trip advisors complained the rooms are too dark. Well, the walls are painted brown and the floors are stained choclate brown. So, yes, I agree, and before leave i will advise the management of this problem and prod 'em to paint the walls white.
Wouldn't you want your vacation residence with a bright, cheery atmosphere? I would.
Enjoy your stay.
