Just some quick info that saved me a bundle.

I booked directly with Riu back in May for travel Dec 3-Dec 14, 2006 at a rate of $350.00 per night.

While surfing the internet and reading various reviews, it showed an avg price per night of $490 on tripadvisor.com. I looked at the exact dates I was traveling and noticed that travelocity, orbitz, hotels.com, and one other site had a 25% special and the rooms were $261.50 per night.

I called Riu and asked if they price matched and was told those were group prices and I would have to cancel with them and rebook through the internet.

Needless to say we rebooked and saved $1062.

Just wanted to pass this info along. Can't wait for Dec to get here.

It is now down to $245/night, Travelocity just credited back my credit card the difference.

Total savings now are around $1254.

How do those companies operate? I've tried pricing a trip through them before and there was no option of selecting a resort. I told them what I wanted, and they responded with something like-"we've got a beachfront, 4 star, 5 miles from town." but no name. Can you get a price on a certain resort?

Hey all:) Those sound like great deals you got, but don't you think its soon to book for Dec.? I am planning on the first week in Nov. and was told not to even start searching until Memorial Day. I am planning on staying at either the Riu Tequila or the Yucatan, (leaning towards the latter). Yucatanman, cant you just enter the dates you want to leave, and a list of resorts show up? Thats normally how I do it. I have noticed with some sites that they are selective about the resorts that they post, and looking for the two I have chosen are not usually among the choices. The Playacar and Palace are.....strange. Maybe they dont have a hard time selling out on the Tequila or Yucatan.

My coworker used travelocity and one week before their flight to Cancun they looked up their flight info and notice they had been put on 3 SEPERATE flights. One flight for the wife, one for the husband, one for the 18 year old. So they called and now they are all back on the same flight be flying into Mexico city LATE and they are putting them up at a hotel and don't get to Cancun until the next day. That stinks.

I'll stick with my travel agent any day!!! We have direct flights from JFK to Cancun. Our flight may be a bit more expensive but the flight times are awesome and no layovers or tricky business.

I realize this thread leans more towards savings with "Travelocity".

I started travelling to Mexico back in 2001 and I have found that Funjet consistently beats out any other method for the the lowest cost. I've never booked Funjet through thier site but rather found a travel agent that is an "approved" Funjet agent. In fact, we just booked the IB Quetzel for July 2007. I was thinking of bypassing Funjet and booking direct. I was abel to find flights on JetBlue as opposed to American which Funjet uses. Right off teh bat there was about a 100 difference (4 travelling). Not a big difference, but I'd rather keep the hundred. I then went to Iberostar's site... as we say in NYC .. forget about it .. Iberostar was quoting a 7day stay for four what Funjet was quoting with airfare, transfers, hotel and all taxes.. So I went back to the same travel agent I hade been using since 2002 and she said she'd check to see if she could beat Funjet's price ..she couldn't and I was not surprised. By the way .. I checked Apple vacations, Expedia, Travelocity, Libery, etec .. etc .. none of them comes close!! Funjet must have a good rep with the hotel chains because I don't know how they do it.

we booked this hotel in november '06 for our stay in feb '07 thru a travel agent. i did most of the research myself. i picked the flights i wanted to be on and the hotel i wanted to stay in. but i was happy with the price we paid ~$269 per nite and that included our flights and direct shuttle from airport to resort door. i did ask more than one travel agent. the next closest agent quoted ~$314 per nite. with four of us going i was very happy with the savings. if anything were to go wrong during our travel, i will have the travel agents phone number and i am sure she will handle the situation....

doing some price checking is important as with anything you purchase. i stopped checking after i booked, because i didn't want to know if there was a lower price being offered :)
