First Time to Riviera Maya - Hotel Question

Hi All,

I'm planning my first trip to the Riviera Maya (though I've been to several other vacation spots in Mexico). I may be travelling alone (I'm a single, 40 year old woman). It looks like the reccomendation is to stay close to town (as opposed to a far out resort) since I may be alone. I'm looking to relax by the pool, meet other people (other singles would be nice) and hit the town occasionaly. I don't want to end up someplace that is all couples. I've looked into the Blue Parrot, Riviera del Sol and Playa Maya. Can anyone make any recommendations (safety is also important since I may be alone).

Thanks so much!

Hey mugsy! I hope Baltobabe sees your post...from what I understand, she travels alone, too. Nothing but raves about the Iberostar resorts from her! She has been of great help to me (although I'm not travelling alone -- sounds peaceful, though!)...I'm going to the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo next summer.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Playa del Carmen

I would suggest you check out what this site says about each of the hotels you mentioned, first off, if you haven't done that already:

Playa Maya is at tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g150812-d284657…

Riviera del Sol is at tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g150812-d268057…

and the Blue Parrot is at tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g150812-d154882…

I run Playa Maya and can tell you that we have a lot of couples, although we also have some singles, especially singles travelling together. Don't know about the other two in the same firsthand way, obviously (trying to keep one hotel in shape is enough work for me!), but given its bar's long-standing reputation as a singles nightspot, I would guess the Blue Parrott probably has more singles than either of the other two. We're undoubtedly much quieter than they are, whereas they're undoubtedly much livelier at night. I'd say more about Riviera del Sol if I knew more, although the most obvious thing with that property is that it's off the beach, whereas Playa Maya and the Blue Parrott are right on it.

Anyway, as I say, those links provide you lots of reviews and comments and links to comments elsewhere about each hotel, so I'd start there!

best,

Steve

My wife and I have been to Playa a couple of times and stayed at the Ibearostar Tucan & Ibearostar Parisimo. These resorts are head and shoulders above anything else in the area. Ibearostar is the largest all inclusive with headquarters in Spain, so you get a European flavor at their resorts and people from everywhere. Great food, great transportation with shuttles to and from Playa, a can't miss place to stay.

We always look for Ibearostar when we select a resort because their quality has always been excellent. Have fun and take in some tours. If you want to Scuba dive when there, I went over to Cozumel on the ferry out of Playa and went to Blue Bell Diving on Cozumel and received one on one instruction. The experience was fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!111

YOur thoughts as to Blue Parrot and Playa Maya are quite right - you will feel isolated in the all inclusives and its a hassle getting into town whereas these places are in a great spot close to shops and restaurants and you'll meet people at the bar at Blue Parrot. Either of those properties are good, i stayed at the Albatross once too and that was a good location bit further on than Steve's place. From there its an easy stroll to other bars, restaurants and then easy to get home.

see you soon

Hi,40 and single I wil advise you to stay close to town Playa del carmen were you can walk along the famous 5 th ave. and you will see and meet plenty of single men and women at the cafes ,bars, and boutiques in the corridor, now if you just want to lay by the pool them you may want to try the hotels with the big pools and away from town, since must of the hotels in town dont have a pool or they are too small must of the single people go to the mamitas beach or tukan beach north from porto real hotel.advise if coming after dic 19 make reservation now for the full stay very busy here and rates go up almost 30% well good luck hope you got the men of your dreams.

I would agree with staying in town near all the shops, cafes, restaraunts, bars and beach. The all-inclusives are "hit or miss" for singles (usually the latter). Blue Parrot is o.k., for the same price check out mosquitoblue.com - Similiar hotel in the center of town, very NICE, central location (3 block off the beach, near Blue Parrot hotel).

I have been to both iberostar parisio del mar & iberostar tucan both resorts are wonderful, however the tucan is very close to playa del carmen which is convenient and the beach & ocean are much nicer there. you can't beat the iberostar resorts
