The only trip I would book in advance is swimming with the dolphins. There are a very limited number of people per time slot and it fills up fast. Other than that I would book when at the hotel.

I wouldn't pre-book because they are usually not refundable. You can book through your tour operator once you arrive at the resort. Plus, you'll be able to see when the theme nights or when you want to book your specialty restaurants and plan accordingly.

We've just returned from the Tucan and booked Xel Ha and Xcaret with our first choice rep when we arrived, really easy. We thought xcaret was a lot better than Xel Ha and would have chosen to do only one if we knew they were both similar. Xcaret has a show 6-8pm which is brilliant and because Tucan hotel is only 15 mins away they take you back to your hotel and 13.30 and pick you up and 15.30 to give you chance to eat and shower.

Our favourite tour was the Coba jungle tour - don't miss it.

Hotel is stunning too.
