Just back from Viva Wyndham Maya - questions? |
|
Couple of FAQs. 1. Beach is improving daily. Large sandbags are being erected to protect and expand the beach. When I left yesterday they had around 8 rows of chairs on one half of the beach and were working on the second half. 2. Weather. Hot n sunny all but 2 days of our 13 day trip. Much windier than I remember last year and years past. Ocean not calm but fun for boogie boarding etc etc. 3. Adjacent resorts are not protecting their beaches and therefore losing some more palms etc etc. However, the resorts are set back further and therefore they had more beach to start with. 4. Playa del Carmen is getting bigger and bigger. Starting to become too much like Cancun South for my taste as 5th Avenue keeps growing and growing. Any questions welcome. Mike |

Hi Mike, Did you make it down to the Azteca? If so, how was the beach? Hope your trip was good. Amy7399

We're going to the Azteca 4/11 but will probably go to the Maya as well as I heard there is more to do there. Did you use the spa? How was the food? We're not looking for gourmet but hoping it's good. Hoping the beaches will be a bit better by the time we get there. How's the pool? My kids are psyched about the swim up bar.

do you have any pictures?

Hi Amy/Tired. My kids (14/15) made friends with some kids from teh Azteca. I never made it over but they said that the beach there was in better shape than Maya. However, Maya improved a lot during our stay and they still had a full crew working all day when we left so I suspect it is still improving. The friends they met spent ost of their time at Maya. They said there was simply much more to do for "kids" at the Maya. I will upload some pictures over the weekend. Mike

HI I think the Royal hideaway is the next resort. How is the beach? Can we swim in the ocean? I will be ther on march 31. THank you Judy

RH is two resorts South. You can see the most northerly part of the RH from Viva Maya but not the beach. The ocean is less calm than usual because of the, in my experience, unusually steady winds. However, it is warm and wonderful to swim in. Mike

oops.... RH is two resorts North of Maya not south. You can therefore see the most southerly point of RH from Viva. I have some pictures which I will upload which show this. Mike

Did you do any excursions and were you able to book them from the resort? How was the food? Do they have a drink of the day at the bar? I'm thinking of switching from the Azteca to the Maya (if possible) now that I'm learning more and it seems like the kids would have more to do at the Maya. I'm looking for R and R but I need them to be happy for me to be happy. I'm not sure I'd be okay with them going to the Maya and me staying at the Azteca. Do you know how long of a walk it is from the Azteca to the Maya?

Hi Mom. Daughter had camera over the weekend. I'll try to get the pics tonight. Azteca to Maya is about 5 minute walk along the sidewalk. Can't walk along the beach these days. Bars make whatever drinks you want. They have a list of cocktails but they will make whatever you ask them to. I forget how old your kids are. My advice, if they are 15 or less, would be to "force" them to join in with the waterpolo and volleyball games even if it means you play with them a couple of times. Thats the way they meet their friends without having to introduce themselves. Once that's done, they will be having lunch/dinner with their buddies and maybe allowing you to be with them once in a while. Not sure what room options you have. Bear in mind that these are not luxury places, so your best bet is to get rooms as close to the pool/ocean as possible and facing into the resort not facing the adjacent ones. Building 1 is left side and inside facing rooms are even numbers. Building 2 is right side and inside facing rooms are odd numbers. Code is easy. For example 2201 is building 2, second floor, facing in 1st room on the ocean. 1108 is building 1, ground floor facing in, 4 rooms back from the ocean. I doubt they will put you in building 3. If they do, its a new building and the rooms are nicer but it is at the top of the resort and therefore furthest from the beach.

Thanks for the help. I've put a call in to Wyndham to see if we can switch to the Maya. Someone I worked with said it would be better for the kids. We are booked for ocean view rooms, so hopefully those will be okay. I'm not needing luxury, just clean. Did anyone use the spa? Good idea about the participation, some of mine are a little shyer than others. (15 is typical 15 year old girl) Hopefully she'll find some kids to hang out with.
