I guess the answer is because Cancun has 1,000 times as many people going there compared to Merida. There are early morning flights direct to Cancun from around 350 USD and you can still get to Merida by teatime. It's not a lot quicker if you fly all the way with one stopover.
Thank you. That's a good point. I only wish I could get to Merida as quickly and cheaply as I can get to Cancun. But then people in hell want ice water, too. :)
Unfortunately the "cheap" airfares even to Cancun seem to have gone away. I paid $400 in late January, and then took the bus to Merida. That same fare is now closer to $800! It's starting to make flying direct to Merida look more competitive. I suspect this is temporary though, and rates to Cancun will drop again.
It took me much longer to get to Merida by plane than it takes by flight to Cancun, transfer to centro, and the bus to Merida. After making the 18 hour trip via Mexico City (should have been 8.5) in December, I will gladly fly into Cancun and take the bus!
I know this was an isolated incident due to fog or something in Mexico City, but considering the frequent smog in Mexico City, and that 4 out of 4 flights were significantly delayed - Im back to Jet Blue NYC - CUN.
Aero Mexico had great base fares but with the taxes they double. Now that they have to show the taxes in the rate, it makes sense that the costs are double. I paid $476 for Christmas-New Years when I booked in June, but with the taxes and fees the ticket was $800something.
