First question...what is the best site/travel agency/method of booking a trip to Isla Mujeres and Avalon in particular? We will be going on October 6th for our honeymoon and I would really like to be able to cancel (without penalty) if there is a hurricane coming. So, a site with a good/cheap insurance policy would be good.

Is the trip from the airport to the ferry still included?

Are the villas worth the extra money over the tower rooms?

How thick are the walls...can you hear everything going on next door?

Is it ok to bring your own beer/mixed drinks down to the pool and/or beaches in the area (we are thinking we are not going to pay for the all-inclusive option)?

We went to Playa del Carmen last september and had a good time snorkeling so I'm thinking that will be one of our main activities. From all the reviews it seems like the Avalon is probably the best place to be if you intend to do alot of snorkeling...is this true? Do we need to bring our own equipment?

How long does it take to get to the restaurants "in town"? Would it be wise to buy some groceries and keep them in the room? How are food/drink prices? Are they gouging the tourists there?

Any recommendations are more than welcome!

Thanks.

IM is a perfect choice for your honeymoon. My oldest daughter spent her honeymoon there last July and loved it. In answering your questions, here goes:

(1) We own a villa timeshare, so we contact Avalon directly (http://www.avalonvacations.com/index.html). However, I am sure all of the major travel sites have Avalon Reef listed, so shop around for the best deal. As for trip insurance, we never leave home without it. AIG/Travel Guard (www.travelguard.com) is the one we always use.

(2) Free transportation from CUN to AR is included in the all inclusive package. If you don't do all inclusive, the cost is $26 PPRT from CUN to the port of Cancun. There, you'll board the ferry to IM. It's cost is $7 PPRT. We don't do the all inclusive, but use AR for the transportation, since it's so convenient. Avalon's website has a link on it for booking your transportation with them if you choose.

(3) The villas are DEFINATELY better than the tower rooms. The tower Jacuzzi suites are better than the rooms, but not better than the villas.

(4) In all of our stays there, I never heard anything from the outside (except thunder from a passing storm), so I guess the walls are fairly soundproof.

(5) We always used the beach bar or member's club for our drinks, so I'm clueless about bringing your own to the pool/beach area.

(6) The bridge over to the AR is an excellent place to snorkel, as is King's Bath located on their property on the ocean side of the villas. My daughter and I spent many hours at both on our last trip and really enjoyed it. We always bring our own gear (including plenty of sunscreen). If you're going to spend a lot of time snorkeling, be sure to get a small bottle of mask anti-fogger. It can be found at any dive shop and is often the difference between a good and bad time. Nothing worse than having to wipe your mask out every five minutes. Some folks use spit, but this doesn't work well at all (not to mention gross).

(7) There is a grocery store located on the south end of Hidalgo Street in the town square area. We use it for breakfast foods. We didn't notice higher prices for food there, but with today's higher fuel cost, I'm sure that'll change.

Now, go and have a GREAT time. Please post a review once you get back and let us know how it went. :) Rocker

Hola! We were there in April and did our reservations through Hotwire. We booked just 3 weeks before our trip and did the the AI staying in a tower room, it worked out to about $100 per night.

Transportatation from & to the airport wasn't included and cost $26 total for the 2 of us(after hearing what other people had paid on their own, this is the only way to go).

Do bring your own mask & snorkel. You can rent fins for cheap if you need them & with most tours it's part of the package.

Town is a nice 5-10 min. stroll from Avalon. The food is very inexpensive and Great. Most of the places in town have 2 for 1 drinks. I don't think it would matter if you brought your own drinks to the pool or beach.

Paradise for your honeymoon doesn't suck! If you rent a golf cart, do it through the hotel(easy & a little less). Congratulations and have a great time! Please report back after your trip. :-)

Hotwire you say? Never tried that site until about 5 min ago. I didn't find the Avalon on there. I did see that they will book you in some mystery hotels in Cancun though. Did you do the lowest price guarantee mystery hotel method?

I just wanted to add that you can book your own transfer from the Cancun airport to the ferry via several companies - we use Best Day, which is $17RT per person, but you can also use Cancun Valet or AGI - all reputable companies that provide this service.

Food on Isla is wonderful - a fun site to check out is: http://hollyeats.com/IslaMujeres.htm You are also going during low season, so prices will be much cheaper than during high season.

If you would like an American booking agent, Kathryn is wonderful - she can book your accommodations (including the Avalon), your travel insurance, your airport transfer - just about everything - I have used her before and she has an excellent reputation. http://www.kathrynstravel.com/

We are thinking about the Avalon for November. Right now beachdestinations.com has the best price for a villa room from our departure airport. We are in West Texas and usually route through Houston. If you're going out of DFW you should find good deals on their charter flights. We have used that site before with no problems.

Our trip to Cancun in April we used Orbitz because they were offering a $200 off special. We learned about the unadvertised special from board memebers and called to see if they were still offering it and they were at that time.

I've also booked several trips to Mexico directly from Continental's web-site. We can't use charter air from our aiport. It's either Continental or AA. Continental is always cheaper.

Hola Sumo! For Hotwire we signed up for the Hotwire hot deals. They send us emails called the Hotwire travel ticker(you look through the list) and you will see Mexico all- inclusives w/ air. Choose Cancun- you put in your dates and it shows a list of hotels, the Avalon is the only one that shows for Isla. We did the process a couple of times because the price kept changing, once we had the price we wanted we bought, went to TA & read the reviews and got scared, but went and loved it.

I also want to clarify ground transportation: airport to ferry by van(we were the only ones), ferry to isla included, cab from ferry to Avalon and reverse to return home- total for 2 of us $26 - which you pay when you get to Avalon. Hope this helps. Have Fun!:-)

Hola, Mr. Hola. There must be a difference between going all-inclusive vs. not when it comes to Avalon's transportation pricing. We don't go all-inclusive, and our transportation was $26 PPRT which didn't include the ferry to IM or taxi from the port to the resort. On a related note, we found that there is substantial fare differences between taxi drivers for the same distance (i.e. port to resort).

I am leaving for AR in a few days.

Was wondering if there is anything that is a "MUST DO OR MUST SEE". Would love to know where to go for GREAT tacos and Maragritas. Also, is there jet skiing off the island? Where is the safest place to go? Around how much? Thanks!!!

Going for my engagement celebration!!!!!

Does the all inclusive mean all drinks and meals. Im seeing some reviews saying there are restrictions.

Does anyone know?

We opted for the all inclusive.

I just went on a girls getaway with my childhood best friend and we had a blast. To answer your question: the all inclusive option does cover all food and drink except at the "mi casa su casa restaurant". (no shorts or beach attire allowed inside). If the menu has a star beside it...you have to pay 1/2 the price that is listed. It seemed like it was the steak and lobster was extra. But if thats what you want...it was only like 11 bucks for steak or lobster dinner. We did it through book it and we got a steal of a deal including transfers, insurance and all-inclusive option.
