Cozumel Forum: BEWARE the Reef Club Cozumel

 BEWARE the Reef Club Cozumel

Our family of 5 adults stayed at the Reef Club 12-29-06 thru 1-5-07. All of us got sick on different days with diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting and chills. We do NOT believe this was a virus we brought from home. We talked with several other people staying at the resort and many, many of them were sick. We did not drink the water, not even to brush our teeth. We were upset that bottled water was not provided in the rooms. All other resorts in Cozumel that we've been to have provided bottled water. We were told by the front desk to go to the gift shop and buy bottled water ourselves! We did buy the bottled water but this was an added expense. We hardly ate or drank anything the last 3-4 days since we did not feel well, so we feel we definitely lost out on the all-inclusive part we paid for. They are adding a new section to the resort and kept turning the water off every day. We feel by doing this that the lines were back-flushed and dirty and even found a small, red worm in the toilet bowl one night! Disgusting! This is the same water that they rinse the blenders with after making drinks! We definitely would not go here again.

Instead of 'REDRUM' in this establishment it is 'REDWORM'. That is simply gnarly!!!

We were just having this conversation this morning on the post I listed below. I think the guy I was talking to stayed there the same time you did. Don't forget to leave a review on trip advisor to warn others.

I'm really sorry you had such a crappy time. Sure hope this doesn't turn you away from Cozumel. Next time try the Melia or the Elcozumeleno.....You will be pleasently surprised.

I was there Dec 24th--Dec 31st. My daughter and I both got sick the night of the 30th and had to fly home the next afternoon. What a nightmare!!! We both still were vomiting at the airport although neither one of us had eaten since the day before. At first I wasn't sure if it was from the water or the food but I only brushed my teeth a couple of times -- that was before I knew about the water being turned off every night. The second day we were there I could see visible dirt in the water coming out of the faucet and also in the toilet. After that I avoided the water completely. I missed my dive on the 28th due to being queasy and vomiting a couple of times. Friday and Saturday were better--until Saturday night!! That's when I got violently ill I NEVER have been so sick in my life!!! It was the worst trip I ever have been on.

I did see one message where the woman was changing her plans due to these reviews--Hopefully they will enjoy their vacation!

I'm not sure if I was the person you were referring to, but I was booked at the Reef Club until I saw your, and others posts. I'm now paying a lot more, but staying at the Coral Princess.

To everyone who takes the time to write reviews--- THANK YOU!! I am grateful. I can tell you I've been deathly (no exageration) sick in Mexico before, and I don't care to ever experience anything close to that again.

I've also mentioned some of these Reef Club reviews on the Scuba Board in hopes of warning others. If people have gone to the trouble to write the reviews, I feel a 'civic' responsibility to share them. It may sound a little nuts, but I know how appreciative I am.

Thank you.

Mo, You may be harboring concerns about getting sick. I have been to Cozumel multiple times and only be mildly sick once. I can't say with certainty what happened but I do not believe that it caused even one day loss of diving. Of course I don't partake in buffets or AIs period.

I also don't drink (thus not to excess) and I do my best to avoid getting sunburned or other heat related problems.

Please do not go with the underlying apprehension that you will get sick.

To CoPilot 54

At the Reef Club it is not "underlying apprehension" under the current conditions at Reef Club the place should be shut down and cleaned and tested until it meets standards. The trouble is, however, that Mexico most likely has no standards!!

Believe me -- getting violently ill was the last thing on my mind but it still happened. And for NO GOOD REASON!! This wasn't some flu or virus. Food poisioning is preventable and I should not have had my Xmas vacation ruined due to Reef Club's carelessness in the kitchen. There is no reason anyone else should suffer either!!

I am not associated with the Reef Club in anyway other to pick up divers there. The Reef Club gets very high marks with almost all of my clients. From the symptoms you stated, there is a high chance that you guys got a touch of dysentery. I am surprised that the Reef Club did not provide you with drinking water, which is coustomary, at most hotels on the island.

Like Co-pilot stated...open salad bars can be killers. I would never eat from one, even in the states. I don't know how many times I have seen people sneeze all over the food.

Well Captain Ron I think you need to read more all of these folks can't be imagining this, everybody I've ever run into at the airport or wherever has had issues and tles about Reef and none of them were good, granted its not a scientific survey but this place needs to be boycotted,, and they just keep running cheaper specials instead of fixing/cleaning up the place..

I've been going to Coz for years. We own a place at Nah Ha in the north end that has its own secondary purification system, but even before then, I used the tap water to brush my teeth at Plaza Las Glorious, Barracuda, Casa Mexicana, and Vista del Mar without ever having a problem with sickness.

I drank bottled water back then for hydration as the tap water has a different taste than I prefer.

I suspect few other people also get sick from the different styles of food and maybe a few too many adult beverages.

We are a group of 10 who were booked for the Reef Club Jan 21-28 '07. Thanks to the many people who taken the time to warn everybody, we have switched to the Hotel Cozumel and Resort (at a great Expense plus no refund for the difference in cost!). Has anyone gotten anywhere with SunWing over their no refund + pay an admin fee to switch policy. I feel really burned to have to pay so much money to get out of a bad situation (food poisoning, beach closed, no water, etc)
