 La Choza and Tony Rome's

Opinions about these 2 restuarants? We will be stopping in Coz for the day on a cruise and hubby would like to eat dinner there. looking for a kid friendly restaurant with great local food that is close to the pier.

Thanks!

Other suggestions also welcome

Cozcouple, I've been to Tony's more than once and you can take offense to whatever you want. I'm entitled to share my experiences there just like you are. Just because it's not favorable doesn't mean I can't share it or that it's not accurate. You've been there once, I've been there about a dozen times. Yeh, he sits and asks how everything was, but then once he's comfortable, the wining starts. By the way, he is not the only restaurant owner in Cozumel or anywhere that coms and sits at the table. Maybe you just don't pick the right places if you think Tony's was so great. Notice the locals don't support him either. If you get away from trip advisor or Tony's personal promotion board, you will find many with the same expereiences.

Trunkfish, if Tony Romes is so bad in your view why have you been there a dozen times?

Trunkfish, I didn't say you couldn't share your experience. All I wanted to say was that the reader's of this post should not base their opinion on just your opinion, or just mine for that matter.

I have been to Tony's many times, you must have misread my post. My husband and I really enjoy Tony's company, and have never found him to be whiny. That's fine if you don't , not everyone is going to like him. It doesn't matter to me who else on the island supports him or not, I consider him a friend and do not judge people (or restaurants) on what others think.

I have been to lots of other restaurants on Cozumel, and have enjoyed them very much. But I am specifically responding to what you said about Tony Rome's.

I agree with Trunkfish regarding Tony Romes--but also know everyone is entitled to their opinion. And I agree, if you want to the owner to sit down and chat with you, that is certainly not unique with Tonys place. And , while I may be an Ameican living in Cozumel, I am really not looking for American food in Cozumel---so much good local food to sample with much better atmosphere.

But, whatever you may choose in Cozumel, I hope you enjoy! Thats the most important thing.

First of all you are missing the point. ElliBean asked for "GREAT LOCAL FOOD" I do believe that Tony Romes does not fit that description.

Adrian at Especias will come out and sit and chat with you if you eat there, Jorge at Jorges Tacos will come out and chat with you if you eat there, he even had one of his staff go to a store and get us some desert as he doesn't provide any on the menu. The owner of Tio Jose's also came out and visted with us.

I don't thik it is uncommon for owners to come out and chat with the customers and if I was looking to eat great local food and stay more center of town I would choose Casa Denis over Tonys or LaChoza

OK time to chime in, I am a local and I fully support and recommend Tony Rome's place. He has been bulding the new restaurant since the hurricane, and right now it might not be the prettiest place, and yes right now there are plastic tables, but, going to Tony's is well worth it just the same, and will be even more so when he's got the place finished.

Tony is a very kind and generous human being who goes out on a limb often for people, sometimes people he doesn't even know, he is a wealth of knowledge on many subjects Cozumel and is always going out of his way to help people. His food is good, specially the ribs and the chicken parmesan, his key lime pie is to die for and his Flamethrower Margaritas are legendary, and quite yummy (just don't have too many to fast or you'll pay for it).

It is NOT true that he wines all the time, he's human as we all are, and well there's alot of crap to deal with here that is just mind boggling (it would take a book for me to explain just how bass ackwards some things are here).

But don't put the man down for this, his heart is gold, and his food is not bad at all. Little known fact that Tony used to sing in Vegas many years ago, and he was also in a movie with Frank Sinatra back in the heydays. He is in his own right a bit of a celebrity, and this is something no other restaurant in Cozumel has.

Yes, there are many great restaurants in Cozumel, and everyone will have their favorites, going to Tony Rome's is well worth it and meeting the man is always a pleasure. I can't wait until the new place is finished, he's putting alot of work and money into having a lovely restaurant and soon he will, and in my opinon he deserves all the support he gets, and he certainly has mine.

Enjoy Cozumel!!!

CoPilot, is that the best you could come up with? Grasping at something to disparage me are ya?

Not that I owe YOU an explanation but I'll answer for the sake of others. I actually agree with Antonio to a point. Tony has a heart of gold mostly, but his wining got too much for me to take on my last trip. He's always made offers to help me get stuff done at my condo, but that's what I pay the management company for. I've never thought his food was very good I only go when a group is getting together there. There are a dozen or two other places I would recommend before Tony'sand I just get mind baffled when people rave on about his place when there are so much better places to go especially when the poster is asking for LOCAL food.

Good Lord

EllieBean, if Casa Denis is on your list of options, then that is also an excellent choice.

Please ignore all the other silliness here. Some folks need to denigrate others to feel better about themselves. Unfortunately, we've been stricken with such a character of late. But take heart, such people are always their own worst enemy.
