 Hotel Cozumel-Not recommended.

They're trying, but this place fails to satisfy in EVERY category.

We stayed all inclusive. The staff were friendly, but the accomodations were a little below average for this price level. Plenty of amenities--beach towels and all that. But like alot of hotels at this level, you can tell they suffer from a restricted budget. The entertainment is laffable, but you can have a good time--karaoke, bingo, pellet gun target shooting, and a virtually non-existent nightly stage show.

The drinks are plentiful, if not very tasty, and the big negative: The food is atrocious. Breakfast, dinner, et al. Watch out for the tortilla chip machine at the pool snack bar that sends a fairly severe shock up your arm when you grab the door, and the nacho cheese machine that dispenses ice cold cheese.

Now...you get what you pay for, so I always take complaints I read on this website with a grain of salt. There are haters who post on this site who are probably never satisfied with any trip they take, especially where foreign countries are concerned, since different cultures scare many Americans. Remember: you get what you pay for. You go cheap? You get cheap.

Having said that, I knew what we were in for. We didn't pay much for this trip, and we didn't get much in the way of hotel experience.

Basically, we roughed it at Hotel Cozumel, and that's putting it nicely.

Of course, the diving was amazing. We recommend Anita Divers. They'll take you on a slow boat, they won't rush you, they won't drop you in the middle of a bunch of other divers--we never saw anyone else--and you'll get a good lunch.

Back at the hotel, we made the best of the pitiful accomodations: The pool is big--although there is no pool bar. (Dolphins were kept here during Wilma last year.) Guest-wise, there are all the usual suspects: a preponderance of Texans, hyper-flirty activities guys, and the rare-as-a-hammerhead sighting of the ever-elusive hip, young couple.

The bottom line is universal: YOU make the party. If you're a hater,

you're going to find something to hate everywhere you go. We had a great time at a way below average property.

My family and friends could have a good time at a pencil factory.

Will we stay at Hotel Cozumel again? No. The place is below average. (In their defense, though, they keep the place pretty clean, but there's just nothing you can do in the sweltering humid Yucutan to keep your room from smelling borderline mildewy on a daily basis).

Should you go there? I recommend against it, but if it's all you can

afford, and you're good people, you'll be all right. Remember: You make the party.

Happy travels!!

Actually after returning home to wash my dirty laundry. I hated to drop in that last item that had that mildewy smell, because it reminded me of the blast that I had just had and it was over. ALL Over! But had I not washed it promptly. It would have had little blackk specks all over it by the next day, so the moral of the story is enjoy the mildewy smell, your on vacation!!! Cant get that at home. Unless you never wash your clothes!

twin, that is too funny. I know right... like the hotel should take away all the humidity on the air because it is a persons vacation and heaven forbid they vaction in a tropical (humid) place and not expect to have things smell a bit. LOL. Next time ask the manager to wave the magic wand and remove the humidity.

I don't like excess humidity in my room and have never been uncomfortable in Cozumel with air conditioning on.

This hotel USED to have carpeting...........and a few years ago they removed it which I took to be a smart move since maybe that would mean less "moldy" odors............apparently not............too bad.

marcus, "obvious agendas"...now I am intrigued. What agendas do you speak of? (because they are not obvious to me)

There are many fine hotels, on the island and I point them out all of the time. Do you think that there are none at the other end of the spectrum? I live here every day of the year and I just report what is told to me first hand, by folks that stay wherever. Personally, I have no interest in, nor could I care less how any hotel is run since I live in a house. But if I hear many responces, good or bad from my clients, I feel that posting these remarks might help some uninitiated person. I would think that most people would appreciate warnings or kudo's from folks that might have some experience, on the island.

Why are you so hostile any time someone makes a complaint about an island experience? Do you really think that no one has a bad experience here and if they post saying so, then they must be lying or have contorted the facts?

I didn't even stay at the Hotel Cozumel. I just couldn't resist the mildew smell part of the post. Im missing it already! I live in Tulsa, the humidity has nothing on us :) I would go back tomorrow if I could! Maybe live there too! The airconditioning at El Coz was A++++

My wife and I stayed there and found it better than we expected relative to cost. We even took the AI package not expecting to eat there all that often since we would be in town most evenings. The place is rated 2 1/2 to 3 stars, and in my opinion is exactly that. I wanted to stay in that area in order to attend many Carnaval activities and just be able to head down town without using taxis or a car. I will admit that my stays in Cozumel are not during the hot & humid summer, so really can't comment of the musty mould issue, other than to say there is a bit evident year round in all the places I have stayed. It is hard to say whether there has been any significant changes to management that may have changed how the place is run, but I for one would stay there again, and enjoy my visit.
