Cozumel/Cancun on My Lonesome

Just managed to get a 4 week break between jobs in a couple of weeks time. Thinking of spending the time in Mexico diving and seeing the sights. Does anyone know whether there is decent accomodation available in Cozumel for the backpacker type or is it all big hotels? I know the rest of mexico will be fine for backpacking. If anyone can help with names of places in Cozumel that would be great and a recommended dive operator would be useful as well

Thx

Dan

Dan-

Lucky you! ...Yes there are plenty of smaller hotels that I think you would enjoy. Aguilar, Pepita, Bahia, San Miguel, to name a few. There is also a hostel that recently opened called 'El Hostelito,' (I think that's the correct name).

As far as a dive op, I am sure Betsy could accomodate you. http://www.geocities.com/scubabetsy

Have fun!

The new, and only, hostel on Cozumel is Hostelito on 10Av. very near the ferry pier and the center. The charge is $11 per night and it is a totally new and very clean operation operated by a Chetumal family with many apartments here in Cozumel.

Several suggestions for dive ops. The following three offer larger tanks for longer dives and long surface intervals on a beach:

Others include:

Also for dive ops, a good , very reliable one to contact is Betsy at http://www.geocities.com/scubabetsy . Tomthetreeman mentitioned her in his post and I know he has much personal experience with her dive ops. She has been in the business here for many years.

Lobster, there are several things you may want to ask prospective dive ops before you make your selection:

1) Where do they pick up/drop off? Some will do that in town which makes getting to them easier if you are staying in town. Some operate out of the Caleta south of town which may require a relatively cheap taxi ride to/from there. Of course many will pick up at ocean/beachfront hotels as they go south.

2) Is it a larger or smaller boat? Each offers things that may appeal to you or not.

3) Does the boat have shade? If you burn easily that can be important.

4) Do they go to the southern dive sites at no extra cost? Some charge a bit more for the southernmost dive sites while others do not. Some may not go to the southernmost reefs as frequently.

5) Do they stop at a beach for the surface interval? If so, where and for how long? Personally I like to stop and relax on a beach between dives.

Here is a link that provides reviews on many Cozumel dive ops:

If you want warm water, nice reefs, great water visibilty and a nice safe place, Cozumel is a great choice.

I am sure Betsy will go to whichever reef/location offers the most enjoyment, bottom time, and convenience for everyone involved, based on experience. She runs a top-notch outfit, and does not cut corners. She'll pick you up at whichever dock you're at, but since you are obviously staying in town, you'll most likely grab a cab to the caleta. Yes, the boat has shade. And a rooftop deck for sun.

Tom, glad you added your comments since you have good first hand knowledge about Betsy. I only know that I have heard and read nothing but raves from her clients, such as yourself. I think hers is a much more personalized experience than most.

Hola,

Lucky you for the extended break! All people should have this amount of time off! The world would be a better place!

For your accomodations, try this little B&B, downtown, that includes breakfast. Very reasonable, very friendly, clean and walkable to el centro.

Eliane and staff will take good care of you.

If you are interested in a little apartment, send me an e-mail and I will see what I can do for you! cozumelkelly@hotmail.com
