El Cozumeleno in Dec |
|
We will be at the El Coz Dec 5-14. Can't wait, only 3 weeks away! I'm assuming the resort is very casual and that khaki shorts would be fine for dinner (man or woman)? Or do men need long pants in the al a carte restaurants? The less "fancy" clothes I have to pack, the better! The other issue, we weren't even considering scuba diving, but now that we think about it more, and talk to other people, they are telling us it is a MUST in Cozumel. I can snorkel, but takes me a few minutes to feel comfortable with my face in the water and breathing. So i'm a bit afraid of going way under and breathing. If we decide to, should we use the dive service at the hotel? How much does it cost? How long does it take? I heard you can dive about 20ft without going thru the complete certification? Any comments welcome, and any tips or info on the resort also appreciated! Report as inappropriate |

Dress shorts are ok for the reservations restaurant, though most men wear slacks, and they frown on flip flops or sandals. The Cozumeleo has a free scuba intro every morning in the pool with certified Instructors, it's part of the all inclusive package, and if you like it in the pool the beginner dive in the ocean is 65 dollars, a very easy shallow dive to a nice reef. Just beware of the lobby sharks (travel reps in the lobby, that also meet you at the airport), and stick with the hotels own dive services located on the beach. Make sure to read the reviews for the Cozumeleo here on Trip Advisor. Report as inappropriate

It all depends on what you want to see. Like the above post you can get the lessons in the morning for free at the smaller pool. I personally think if you want to dive then you should get certified near home and have some experience before you go. There can be dangers in diving. The snorkeling at the El Coz was great. Esp around the sand bag and the dock. You can also take a snorkeling exursion but you really don't see anything more or better (except part of a sunken ship) than you can see at the hotel. We only at the ala carte resturaunt 2x and dressed up nice both times me a dress and him khaki shorts/pants. Buffet dinner you can wear jean shorts pretty much whatever except a bathing suite Report as inappropriate

With only 3 weeks left before your trip forget about trying to get certified first. Go to Cozumel with the idea that you will likely go diving, (mental attitude under control about breathing & face in water) and once there and adjusted to the resort try snorkeling in front of and to the south of the resort. I suspect that once you see all that beauty you will want to see more. You will be staying right in the area of some of the best snorkeling on the island, & the planet. Conditions are usually perfect, visability is incredable, the water is normally swimming pool clear, and it will be around 78 to 80 degrees F. I first went to Cozumel to snorkel for a week, lasted the first afternoon before signing up & immediately taking the resort course the next morning, dove that same day & have every holiday since. Just try the free in pool session, the breathing part is really no big deal, you just breath normally at all times. Unlike a snorkel you don't get bits of water in your mouth. If after that you feel comfortable with the experience then try the resort course & go diving. Cozumel is the ideal place for all these FIRSTS. All the diving is drift diving, you are put into the water at the southernmost end, carried by the current northward effortlessly, and when your air gets low you surface and get back onto the boat. The boats used are easy to get back onto, they have ladders similar to pool ladders, and the surface water is fairly calm along the devoloped side of the island. When people take the resort course and go diving with only that amount of training the divemasters stay very close to them, making sure they are not having any problems & monitoring their air usage. So many people use the resort course in Cozumel as their first adventure into diving that the dive operators are properly geared up to make sure it is a good & safe experience. Don't do it if you are not comfortable about it but at least try the in pool free lesson before making up your mind. You should be able to get the name of the dive operator affiliated with the resort & e-mail them for pricing in advance. Maybe someone reading this post may be kind enough to supply that information. Looks like the dive shop for your resort is Scuba Du. You can link to it and reviews about it using the travelnotes web site in my previous post, or directly using www.scubadu.com. Have A Good Time Report as inappropriate

I've been to the hotel once before and am returning Dec 11-18 with a group of 15 from Cleveland, OH - area picked because it has the best snorkeling and scuba anywhere (easily accessible and inexpensive in a week's vacation). People in our group have been to the resort and diving more than a few times. Highly receommended that you try both. The resort offers a scuba class (free) and snorkeling. The snorkel equipment is only lonaed for an hour at a time, or you can pay $10 for the entire day. We purchased our own snorkel gear from dickssportinggoods.com for about $40.The resort dress is very casual. I have eaten breakfast and lunch in my bikini, but remember to respect the people when you venture into town and dress appropriately. We arrive at 1:00 on Dec 11 - Look for the group of 24-54 year olds that will probably be passed out on the beach.
