 Reef Club Cozumel... questions

Hi!

I am spending a week at the Reef Club in Cozumel in April. My Boyfriend has not been on a vacation in over 15 years (owns his own business - hard to leave) and it has been more than 2 years for me since last vacationing. We were so looking forward to going but now are nervous after reading all the reviews on the Reef Club. Regardless, it is too late to abort these travel plans so I have some questions was hoping I could get some answers to....

#1: I traded my two BDR, two bath time share in CA for a HOTEL room at the Reef Club. I have no idea, based on the conflicting desprition, if we will be staying in the Time Share (because it wasa time share trade) part of the resort or in the hotel (beacsue the room was described as a "hotel" room). Can ayone clear this up for me? Have you been in the same situation with regards to rooms at the Reef Club. Also, from what I have read upgrading to the SABOR would be a better idea than upgrading to an ocean front room based on better ammenties (restaurants, bars, fridge in room)and accomodations? Please advise. Thank you.

#2: Do we need to bring beach towels or does the Club provide them.

#3: Do you recommend renting a car? We are planning on only eating at the resort a few nights and heading into town most of the other nights and perhaps for several day trips and will plan to eat there. I understand that taxis are expensive but not sure what to expect with a rental car as far as rates and availability.

#4: Read somewhere that it is OK and suggested to bring our own mugs for drinks (that way we can be assured that they are clean and also they are bigger than the drink glasses they give you at the resort).... please advise.

Thanks so much for your help. I am sure I will have more questions as I get closer!!!

1) Can't help as far as what the trade will get you. Rooms in Sabor are nicer than hotel rooms. Sabor is located farther from beach where some of the time share rooms are right on beach but most Sabor rooms will face the beach I believe where many hotels & time share rooms do not. There is only one restaurant at Sabor the others are all at Reef.

2) Beach towels are provided by both Reef & Sabor.

3) Yes, rent a car. ISIS is recommended here and is right in town but you'll need to taxi there from airport. We've used Thrifty/Dollar (same place) you can reserve on-line and they are right across from the airport so easy access coming and going. Taxis from Reef/Sabor are getting up around $17-18 each way based on posts so in the long run you won't regret a weekly rental...since it sounds like you plan to make multiple trips to town. And you'll need to go to the east side of the island a time or two as well.

4) Ok to bring your own mugs...insulated or cooler cups are great.

We were at Reef in Feburary in a hotel. Had a great time and am ready to return.....my tan is fading. Quit fretting and just look forward to your trip and enjoy!

I stayed at the Reef Club with my son just got back last Sunday. We had a great time. I hear Sabor is great...but I had no problem at the regular rooms. Just the noise from the restaurant next to us but we had ocean and beach right in front of our room. So you should stick to the side without the buffet restuarant.

2. the towels are nice and big

3. I rented a car...very important...don't speed on the other side, it's only 50km, the main west side is 80km. There is police and they are looking for tourists and they know the rental cars with the ads on them. Also night driving is scary on east side and south point. Lots of pot holes and construction. The taxi from Reef club was $12 or 13 depending on the taxi. We went with Excutive since this is one nearby recommended by hotel. But I hear they are more money...oh well we had a great time during day with our rental. Be sure to go to Punta Sur for snorkeling ...we had the william the staff guy there give us a snorkle tour for min. amount! Rental is the only way to get to Punta Sur really.

4. Saw ppl with mugs...I wish I had mine. I filled up empty water bottles. Just be careful what you eat...and don't drink tap water!

Thanks to both of you for your answers to my questions.

I have actually made some changes to my plans as RCI had a unit become available at the Melia Vacation Club Cozumel, the very same week. They exchanged my Reef Club hotel room without any additional money for a studio @ Melia. AI rate was about $50 more for the week. I am certain that we would have had a great time at the Reef Club but was concerned not only about the virus that seems to be spreading there but also about being so far from town. We want to eat in town most nights in spite of the fact that we have paid for AI. Thanks again for your help!

Wise choice getting away from Reef!

A friend of mine stayed at Melia and said it was nice.

We ate at La Mission twice. Their coconut shrimp is great and so was the lobster/shrimp fish plate for two.

We may stay AI, but I love eating off resort.

Day trips are great, there is so much to see and do and not very far to drive to get anywhere. Have fun!

We were at the Melia in February and loved it. We are planning to go back next year. The timeshare rooms are very nice. We had room 604 and it had a great view. I would try to get a room on the 4th floor or higher. They have glassed in balconeys and you can see the ocean from bed. Here is a link to part of my trip report that has several pictures of the resort. Let me know if you want to see more.

We just returned from the Reef Club timeshare area. We also traded from another location but we received paperwork stating we would be in the Reef Regency timeshare area of the hotel. You may want to call your timeshare provider.

You will receive cards at check-in for your beach towels. You get them in the morning and turn the wet ones in at night.

Rent a car for at least a day. Go to the other side of the island. It is beautiful! Stop by Coconuts, it is on top of a hill and the views are wonderful.

If you are in the regular rooms, by the sound of your regular timeshare and what you may be used to, I don't believe you will be happy. They are very small. We saw the Sabor section while on a tour provided by the timeshare people at the resort. Upgrade if you can it seems really nice. Rooms are still small but better than the regular rooms. If you are in the timeshare area, stay there, the rooms are great!

Yes, bring your own mugs. We brought Bubba Kegs, 54oz., and the bartenders had no problem with filling it up!

I just submitted my review of the Reef Club. It's title was: Great Views, Needs Some work.
