 Reef club Cozumel HELP!!!!

I and my husband will be in Cozumel for our 25th anniversary in October. Plans are made to stay at this resort and I have read the reviews and am now scared %$%$^. IWe have three kida in college and therefore the price was a large factor as well as other cost cutting measures. But the choice of facilities is not looking like a great choice. Does anyone without an invested interest have any good news about this place?

Help

If you can tell us what you're looking for...maybe we can help....but if you're already booked, you are probably going to lose money with the change in booking....From the reef to town is $34 round trip.....10 trips $340...Do you want to be closer to town???

In my mind there are 3 places that are similarily priced that offer a better value than the Reef Club even if there was no other things taken into consideration than the facility. They are the Hotel Cozumel, The Iberostar, and the El Cozumelino. I have stayed at the first 2, plus the Reef Club when it was shiny & new, but not El Coz. Each has pros & cons, but to me they all offer better value. If you can switch, read the reviews, learn what the differences are re beach etc, and change your reservations.

if you can hang on until I get back from my stay at the reef (Sabor) I will let eveyone know all. I have stayed at numerous places, but I keep an open mind no matter. A trip is what you make of it. Yes you may run into obstacles, but dpn't let it get you frazzled, move forward, it's just a single event. We all know we have many events in our trips.

Like Goalie said people have been getting sick there since December 2006. I know I got sick from the FOOD. (Not a virus, not the airplane, taxi, etc.)

I know this becuase I started feeling ill after being there about 4 days. I blew it off thinking it was just "something I ate"

The 5th day was worse- II was so queasy and was supposed to go diving but didn't because supposedly you can barf thru the regulator - but I didn't want to test it.

The 6th day I made it to the beach for part of the day.

The last day we went to town - finally - still didnt' feel well but we were leaving the next day so it was my last chance. We took our youngest and had to eat at McDs.

Later that night was when I got really, really sick!! I know it was the food at the resort - the buffet to be exact - because:

1. I never ate at any of the reservation restaurants

2. Yes, I thought maybe McDs but my youngest ate there and was fine - my oldest didn't go to town - didn't eat McDs - only ate at that buffet the whole week.

3. Some people dont' get sick there.

4. But the ones that do - get violently ill!! over and over for hours and hours.

If you can switch hotels I highly recommend that you do so. Why risk your 25th at this place???

Iberostar is wonderful but costs a lot more- far from town

Melia also is really nice - good food - closer to town - more breeze at the north end of the island.

Sooo, In your own words....You didn't get sick until 5 days there...the kid didn't get sick.....and not everyone at the resort got sick....Sounds like a Virus to me....

Either that or find out just what they put in those Mc Nuggets... :o)

I am at the Sabor section of the Reef Club right now. I have eaten at the Mosaique restaurant 3 times and the buffet once. There is no virus or sickness going around. Many of the cooks are wearing mask. Many people including me eat spicy food here that we are not accustomed to. The salsa is great here but it does contain jalapeño peppers. Well guess what happens when a gringo like me eats too many jalapeños. I too read these virus reviews before coming and almost all of them raved about the salsa. I have had Montezuma's revenge before and that is not what is going on with these posts. Montezuma’s revenge last for a few days and is accompanied by severe stomach pains. It does not pass in a day but hot chiles do.

I did see one problem at the buffet grill on Saturday night (Mexican night) and again last night. The grill cook uses the same BBQ tongs to handle the raw chicken, beef and pork. The tongs go right from the raw dish to the cooked meat. I refused to accept the meat given to me and told the cook it was not sanitary to serve the cooked meat using the tongs that just came out of the raw meat tray. Well he just kept serving people that night and they were doing the same thing last night when I checked.

Don't worry you will not get sick here but do take precautions when traveling. Wash your hands frequently, don't accept the grill meat if they continue to serve you with unsanitary tongs, don’t eat food in the buffet if it not kept warm enough, don’t eat spicy food if you can't deal with the results (I think it's worth it to a point), and take it easy with the quantity of food and drink.

Finally you should reconsider booking an important event in the Caribbean right in the middle of hurricane seasons. There's a reason it's cheap. Go to Aruba where it's out of hurricane alley.

I'll post my review upon return but overall this place is a good value and the staff is as nice as one could expect.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Cozumel

marczz, I see many precautionary ads about what you saw with the tongs and uncooked/cooked meats. Is that not a way to spread contamination that could cause food borne illness? How expensive is it to use different tongs?

Remember thousands of people go through these resorts each week and only a handful write reviews usually the people who write them had a bad time. So remember to take all reviews with a grain of salt. I have heard that the Reef club has a very nice beach and they are primarily a divers resort, so most days you will probably have the resort to yourself if you don't scuba dive. But you must try snorkeling. I talked with some people and its the only resort they recommend on Cozumel. Most resorts on Coz don't have sandy white beaches you are very lucky to get to go to paradise for your 25th.

And take all the necessary precautions for traveling to the islands. We Americans are so lucky we can turn on our water and do anyhting with it. mainly Drink it, Eat yogurt (always on breakfast buffets)everyday and brush your teeth with bottled water and close your mouth in the shower, don't bite your nails, and carry antibacterial lotion and use it regularily.

You will have a great time. If you have any more ?? please feel free to ask. Kathy
