 Driving to Tulum
Destination Expert   What's this?
for Anguilla, The Valley

I was sort of thinking that I would like to rent a car and go to Tulum - I would love to drive down the coast and see the scenery, see the beach at Tulum and then come back and go to John Gray's in Puerto Morales for dinner.

But, after reading about the dangerous roads and driver's I am now having second thoughts...I'm back to being afraid.

Has anyone ever done this drive? Would there be a recommended day/time?

What about buses - would a bus go this route - would we be able to go to John Gray's and then catch another bus back? How about a taxi?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you,

Ellen

1. Re: Driving to Tulum

We've driven this stretch of rode 3 or 4 times now. We see wrecks on this road every time, but we would drive it again.

Just do not drive above the speed limit and be very defensive and cautious. One return trip to Cancun was at about 6 or 6:30 in the evening. It was very crowded at this time. I would avoid that evening rush hour if possible. I think I would feel better driving myself than taking a taxi. A bus is probably safest of all due to is size.

I would drive. It is a very easy drive. It is straight and the roads are good.

Just did it last week. Not bad. The drive is not all that scenic, and a lot more stop and go (actually slow and fast) than I had thought. But I really didn't feel as uncomfortable as some others on here driving. Felt safe, was more concerned getting a ticket, because the speed limit would go up and down from 40 km to 110 km, quite often. Anyways, I'd do it again no problem, rent a Jeep, it'll be fun!

Are you staying in Cancun or the Mayan? If your in the Mayan take a collectivo it's cheap and safe ($2 US from Playa to Tulum).
