“ Ocean in front of the Riu cancun ”

Hi i'm going to the Riu Cancun in Dec. Just wondering if the waves are fairly big?
I was at the Oasis Playa last year and the waves where awsome.,but i was told the waves are alot calmer where the Riu Cancun is.and also i was told that the Riu Cancun is so high that you get alot of shade. just wondering what time of day the sun goes and hides behind the hotel ,and if you can still find some spots with sun (on the beach or by the pool)
