Mexico Drug War Spreading to Cancun

Hi guys, Im going to Cancun next week and stumbled upon this story. I was there last year and everything was fine. I initially believed the drug war was only on bordertowns with the US. But how does everyone feel about his? Does anyone know the exact location?

I think some people are naive to the fact that crime happens everywhere - whether there are a bunch of A1's 20 mins away or not!

It's not as if the bodies were found floating in the RLPA pool! This won't deter me from travelling to Cancun.

Crime does happen everywhere--but their are not the high level of unsolved drug related murders where I come from. This area is one of the centers of drug related activities in the country and the government is struggling to control it--and it is a struggle. I hope the good guys win!

I think everyone should go to Florida, so prices will stay low and I can go to Cancun more often. Maybe Miami or Keys, because there are no drug problems there.

If you are in cancun, and in the hotel zone, chances are you are FINE. Most likely you are more protected than when you are at home. Crime happens anywhere, but you wont find anything like this happening in the tourist areas!

Here is a US government web site you can go to that post regular travel alerts. And yes crime is up in Mexico at this time because of the government's battle against the drug cartel. I love Cancun and Playa but I would definitely use extra caution when traveling "anywhere" in Mexico at this time.

Ha. No drug problems in Miami. That's a good one. But honestly, if you're worried about Mexico then I agree with Danman. Don't go there and spend your vacation being paranoid about your (and your family's) safety. What kind of vacation is that? Try the tropical US destinations (Hawaii, Miami) or the US territories (US VI's, Puerto Rico). Not needing a passport to travel is comforting to some people. More of a sense of home? Knowing what to expect from the government?

We just got back from Cancun yesterday. If I would have read this before I went, I would have been freaking out - but there would have been no need to. Everything was very safe in the Hotel Zone. There was security patrolling our resort day and night, watching the beach mostly for issues. We rode the busses and stopped at the malls and never felt unsafe. The unnerving part was seeing the guards holding guns in front of the nicer stores - outside the Forum shops mall a guard had a semiautomatic rifle at the ready. But after reading a story like that, I'm actually kind of glad there was that kind of protection in front of the stores...

Judging by most of the stories, as long as you don't go there and hang out with the police (and other officials trying to get rid of the drugs) you should be safe! They are the ones being targeted right now.

I just dont get it!

Its terrible that this is happening to the police, but what part of drug cartel members and the police who go after them being shot has any connection to tourism in Cancun?

Do you plan to hang out with drug cartel members or police officials when on vacation?

Do you have a map? The highway to Merida is not the Cancun hotel zone, or even the so called "Maya Riviera"

This is the last time I will respond to these types of posts! Not that I stay at a place where one has to fight for beach chairs, but maybe it would be a good thing if all the afraid people stayed home....
