Monte Alban

Is it a good idea to just show up at Monte Alban and hope for a decent tour guide in English or is that better planned in advance? Any recommendations?

I always recommend Mario, Hector of Clemente. Usually one of the three is available once you get up there. Otherwise, your hotel should be able to recommend another English speaking guide and provide you with his phone number so you can book in advance. But don't get talked into a tour with a group, unless that's what you want. A private guide such as one of the guides noted above, for a couple, should be between 250 and 400 pesos, and the tour should be roughly 1.5 hours. Many guides extend the time if you appear interested, intrigued and ask questions. If you arrive by about 9 or 9:30, you shouldn't have a problem getting one of the three. Later on sometimes they get busy so you might have to wait until one is available.
