Oaxaca to coast

Will be travelling to Oaxaca in a couple of weeks. We would really like to add an few days on the coast to our trip. Has the new road between Oaxaca and the coast been finished? Will it still take 8-10 hours?

It is over 10 hours by bus or around 7 hours by van (which goes across the mountains). No new road. Flying is possible on AeroTucan.

Sections of the widened 175 to Pochutla, which also has portions which by-pass cities such as Ocotlán and Ejutla, are finished, thereby reducing the time by van or rental car. I would think driving would now take around 5.5 hours at the most if you are driving, vans a bit longer depending on the particular driver. Even getting from Oaxaca to Ocotlán is much quicker than it was two years ago, although within the past year I have not driven right to the coast along the all the new sections of highway. Yes, Aerotucan is a nice option.

We just returned from Oaxaca and flew Aerotucan to Puerto Escondido. The flight was very quick and smooth, though the plane is a pretty small 12-seater. We had considered doing the 6+ hour drive but were advised against it, mostly because of the excessive number of speed bumps, tight curves and imperfect roads. But we were told it is definitely drive-able in under 7 hours and only to do the drive during the day, if for visibility if nothing else.

We had our hotel in Puerto Escondido take care of the Aerotucan 'tickets' for us but you can also get them via travel agents in Oaxaca. We got our reservation about a week in advance with no problems.

If you need any more information contact me directly, but we absolutely loved Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido and highly recommend both spots. We stayed at Villas Carrizalillo in PE and it is a pretty special place. We also really recommend Casa de Siete Balcones in Oaxaca, which is extremely well located and had excellent service.

Have a great trip.
