Transportation from OAX to city

Can someone comment on the best way to get to town from the airport? Collectivo van vs. taxi? If we take a taxi, is it a "registered" taxi we will need (similar to DF)? What is the approximate cost of collectivo vs. taxi to centre of town?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's like at the DF airport (but there you must be careful because there are different "authorized" services).

Exiting the main terminal after customs, on your right before you're outside the building there's the taxi booth. The rates are clearly stated (don't recall off the top of my head, but for a couple, a private car v. colectivo is about double, but worth it since you're guaranteed going right to your hotel and don't have to worry about being last to be dropped off). You'll be going to either Zone One or Zone Two depending on if your hotel is downtown or in the burbs. You might not have a choice, depending on time of year, hour of arrival, etc., meaning that you may have to take the colectivo service.

We flew into Oaxaca in November of last year. What Titosarah stated is exactly true and the system works smoothly and is somewhat standard at Mexican airports and large bus stations. You go through the customs area and find a stand where tickets for transport are sold. The exit area at Oaxaca is rather small so it is virtually impossible to miss the stand where you buy the prepaid tickets for taxis and the collectivo vans. We were inside a van within a minute and it left a minute or two later. I suppose if you are the first person in a van you would have to wait a bit longer for more people. Clearly a taxi would cost more unless there are more than two of you since each person pays in the vans. We were dropped off last among the ten or so people who were in the van but it gave us a bit of a look at the town and it only added maybe ten minutes to what a taxi would have taken had we had a bit of a first look at Oaxaca. About three weeks later we used the same system to get back to the airport from our B&B and booked it at an office that was on the zocalo but I am sure you could phone it in also. Sorry but I do not remember the exact cost but you gotta get into town so you have to pay what they ask. At some towns it is possible to catch a local bus into town but at Oaxaca it was already dark and we had not been there before so i did not inquire if a local bus was possible. But many airports are too far out of town to make catching a local bus possible plus if you have lots of luggage that idea is not so good.

Thanks for the information. We have been to DF so are familiar with the transportation stands - nice to know OAX is smaller than MEX!!

There are 4 of us so we'll wait and see what our best option is cost wise...we're not too worried about timing as it sounds like the difference between taxi and van timing might not be too excessive.

Thanks again!

For a group of four, take a private car if one is available, without a doubt.

just an update - easy trip from OAX to our hotel in town. Private van for 4 of us was $220 MXP. Easy and quick trip. What a great city - lots to see and do and easy to walk around and see the sights.

Do the colectivos drop you off in a particular spot or will they drop you at your hotel??

The vans drop you at your hotel. They go around to the hotels starting with the closest one to the airport and making an efficient circuit until the last passengers are dropped off. For 10-12 people this is usually 4 to 6 stops.

There are no private cars unless you have your hotel arrange for one in advance. Taxis are not allowed to wait at the airport for customers. No bus stops at the airport.

Poster #8 is correct as far as getting dropped off at where you are staying. We stayed at a B&B and had the address and gave the address to the van driver and we were dropped off at precisely the correct place even though it was not a hotel. They were efficient in dropping off people in the order that made the most sense and we enjoyed the initial look at Oaxaca too.
